Question 94Z28 won't flash any codes???

Does anyone know why it won't flash codes? It is supposed to be obdI and flash a code 12 so you know that the system is functional, and I know that I jumped the proper connectors. I just did a cam/head install and the ses light has come on and off, now I can't retrieve the codes. What is going on?

Did you have PCM tuning done? If so you cant check codes (at least if its from PCMforless).

Simple.... you can only flash the codes on the SES light by shorting the ALDL pins on the 1993's. From 1994 and up, you need a real scanner.

Fast S/C '94Z - No tuning except for the jet chip module. I tried getting the code 12 with and without the module and it still didn't work.

Injuneer - Does that mean I have an obdII system?

You have an OBD1 but, you need a scanner to get the codes. The "paper clip" method won't work on 94 and above. Don't buy the cheap $20 at the store either... they say they work for 94 but, they don't work either. Did you try to start it without some of the electrical connections hooked up? That would thrown a code... I do that sometimes. Have you got an Autozone near buy? They will scan for free.

Yeah I do have an autozone near me. Will their scanner read mine? I'm confused, let me see if this is right. I have an obdI system, but to access it i have to use a scanner compatible with obdII?

I don't think AZ will scan OBD-I.

You have OBD-I and need an OBD-I scan tool.

(bare with me) So basically I have an oddball year that is obdI, where codes cannot be flashed and only retrieved with a scan tool compatible with obdI

There really is no strict definition to "OBD-I".... it's just a loose term applied to everything before the system the government decided to call "OBD-II", for which there are very rigid technical definitions, and requirements.

If you think the 94 is an oddball because it has a 12-pin OBD-I ALDL connector, and an OBD-I computer, think about the 95's, which have a 16-pin OBD-II ALDL connector, yet an OBD-I computer virtually identical to the one in the 94.

Again, I apologize for my electronic stupidity, but my connector is a 16 pin. They are all dummy slots except for 4 of them. The top has two on the far right. The bottom has one on the far left and one on the far right. Is this kind of variation in the model years common? I'm just trying to understand the different systems.

This car had one owner. I have the original order slip and it was placed in february of 1994. Can that help explain why I have a 16 pin?

on 1994 lt1 you need a REAL scanner like a tech one. Autozone can't do it either. I hate that.

I got a OBDII scanner can i get a cable to pull the code out?

oh by the way the paper clip works on the 94 luminas my dad has one...

Sure sounds like you are describing a 12 pin and not a 16 pin

When it it said in this forum that 1993 was the last year you could flash codes, it is meant to apply to the LT1 F-body. After all, this is the LT1 forum.

An OBD-II only scanner will not work on an OBD-I car.

Believe me, it can get confusing.
Injuneer and shoebox are right on the money.
The 94 is OBD1 with an OBD1 connector but you have to have a scan tool of some kind to pull the codes.
The 95 is OBD1 with an OBD2 connector, which also needs a scantool to get codes but needs an OBD2 connector on the scantool.
This is why Autozone can not (or will not, take your pick. they have the equipment on the shelf) scan your cars codes.
If you have one of these cars and plan on doing mods and maintenance on it you need to invest in a scantool of some kind, it will save you so much time and trouble.
