94 z28 losing power
The other day I was driving from vegas to california. Everything was running smooth. until i was going uphill in 6th gear. I felt the car lose power, so i went into 5th. when i gave it gas the car lost all power nd it turned off. I pulled over nd it always turned on quick in neutral. but as soon as i put it in first, nd give it gas the rpm would go a little bit up and the car dies quick. I waited 20 minutes and everything was fine, i just ended up driving back home. The car is running fine right now, but why would it do that? I drove it all the way down to cali 2 weekes ago, without a problem??
Its a 94 z28, it has a new fuel pump , fuel filter, new egr valve.

Re: 94 z28 losing power
it might have put alittle too much stress on the motor and trans, we had a car do that going uphill, when we took the motor apart the week after it had so much sludge in it im suprised it had anything let alone enough power to make it up a hill that steep...
you might need to do a tune up,
how many miles are on your clutch? did it jerk or jump at all?
or did it just kind of smoothly lose power and bog down?

Re: 94 z28 losing power
What was the elevation where you were driving? Was the ambient temperature extremley high? You may have run into a problem with the fuel vaporizing in the fuel pump suction due to those conditions. This can be particularly true if you were running fuel that was blended for use at lower elevations/temperatures.
Re: 94 z28 losing power
The car lost power smoothly then it bogged down till i pulled over. The car has 86,000 miles, i bought it 5 months ago. The car was parked for over a year when i bought it. I had a new water pump, fuel pump, all radiator hoses, new distributor, new spark plugs, fuel filter and spark plug wires installed in it. I changed the motor oil with full synthetic and the tranny oil too. The elevation was about 4300. and it was about 90 degrees. I only run the car on 91 octane.
Re: 94 z28 losing power
Has nothing to do with "octane".... it's a function of how the gasoline vapor pressure is blended to vaporize correctly at higher elevations and higher temperatures. When the fuel is blended for sea level, as elevation goes up, it becomes easier for the fuel to vaporize. Since the pump intake pulls the fuel into the pump using "suction", it reduces the pressure even more, possibly enough to cause it to vaporize. When the vapor bubbles hit the fuel rails, it will lose power.
Re: 94 z28 losing power
You indicated that it only happened once and hasn't happened since. Don't lug the engine in 6th gear going uphill, at high altitude, in high ambient temperatures.
