94 Z28 Camaro starting problem

Engine will not run. Have spark, fuel pressure and all injectors are firing. Engine has been tuned up (replaced optispark 2 times). Computer has been replaced. Ignition switch has been replaced. Engine has great compression on all cylinders. Was thinking bad fuel but it won't even hit on starting fluid. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 94 Z28 Camaro starting problem

Just in dealing with the basics. Fuel, spark and compression. Take into account you sprayed it with starting fluid.

If you are sure of 2 things! It has spark and it has compression. The answer lies in the spark occurring at the wrong time. That's the only explanation that could account for it not starting.

You must be sure of the 2. Spark and compression.

To confirm the spark occurring wrong you can do the following.

If you bring a cylinder up to top dead, you can remove the distributor cap and confirm the placement of the rotor. For example, if 1 is at TDC, the rotor would be pointing somewhere between the 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock position. Closer to the 6 position, not quite in between. Cylinder 4 is close to the 9 o'clock position.

Get it?

The distributor can't be installed wrong, the teeth wouldnt line up on the shaft. I guess it is possible but highly unlikely that it jumped time. I'll put #1 on top dead and pull the cap for a 4th time to check.

What people do a lot here and I don't understand how is put the opti on wrong. It boggles the mind.

Next, if you already did as I suggested, by checking the location of the rotor in reference to a cylinder at TDC, why do it again????????? That is if you actually did it and did it correct.

In theory - it can't be installed wrong. In the rear world, seems like at least 10% of the installs somehow end up with the teeth (or the dowel pin on the vented Opti) misaligned. Can happen, and does happen with surprising frequency.

maybe a stupid question but did all of the wires get installed correct? did you break any plastic insulation on any of the wire ends on the opti side? did you crack any of the spark plugs? Id check them all as they are kinda hard to install and easily messed up.

Wouldn't that put a kink in your hose?

good point

I can't imagine that many wires being in the wrong location but hey, anything is possible

Thanks to Rob
