'94 LT1 6-Speed, Basic Questions

Recently, I purchased a 1994 Z28 with a 6-speed manual transmission behind the LT1. The car is bone stock.

I found out that the car couldn't break 110 Mph just as I was shifting into fifth gear. At first I thought I had shifted poorly, but when I tried to once again break that speed, the car shut down. I knew then that I had a problem. The first thing I want to do to this car is eliminate the 110 mile per hour limitation, though I'm not exactly sure how to do that yet.

This is my first later model "computerized" car, so I really don't know all that much about them, including the terms. I believe that one of the quickest ways to increase power (not that this car needs it, but you all know how that is!) is to modify/replace the computer brain, which I think is called the ECM. I called JET Performance Products and they said I should wait until March for a programmer to come out for my car because it will do the same thing as their JET Stage II Power Control Module while at the same time it will be able to remove my speed limiter. The PCM doesn’t remove the speed limitation, so it would be a waste of money since I would still have to buy the programmer when it comes out to do that. What brands do you all recommend for these sorts of modifications? Is there any good reading on the Internet at the basic level?

As for air induction, should I do anything aftermarket for it (like a K&N Generation II FIPK, part # 57-3010-1, http://www.knfilterchargers.com/sear...Prod=57-3010-1)?

Any advice for a newbie?

Start off with a cold air kit, or Catback exhaust, and all of the free mods(slight cost), but do not go thru jet performance. Go to http://mywebpages.comcast.net/bherter/ and Bryan will hook you up much better than Jet Performance will and cheaper. After you get that stuff done, go for some headers, cam, gears...etc.

This is an easy fix! I would just have the pcm reprogrammed through pcm4less. The price is only about 99.00 and you can have him give you the power tuning for a few extra ponnies.

Thanks for the link to pcmforless! I'll tell them who sent me.

What is a cold air kit and where do I go to order one? What is Catback exhaust and where do I go to order? What are some of the "free mods" that you are talking about? What brand names are people going with around here? Remember, I am a newbie with no mechanical or technical skills. I change my fluids/filters, break pads and sparkplugs but that's about it.

Thanks for all the replies so far!

I personally prefer Madz28.com over PCM for less, Ion at Madz28 is local (dekalb, ill) and can take care of ANYTHING you might need
A cold air intake replaces your stock air box and connects at your mass air flow sensor it helps get colder air into your throttle body ti increase hp personally i like the SLP one (www.slponline.com) A catback exhaust system is new exhaust from the catatayic converter back. Helps performance alot i also personally have SLP exhaust (loudmouth) any more questions i or anyone else here will be more then happy to awsner them

good places to look at performance mods are...
www.thunderracing.com
www.tbyrnemotorsports.com
www.combinationmotorsports.com <-if you want more internal engine stuff
all those places are a good start for pretty much everything you would want
also scroll to the top of the screen and look for the "supporting advertiser index" link theres alot more in there!
