93 harmonic balancer removal question

Hey guys just a quick question. I'm doing the opti in my 93z28. I went to pull the balancer off and none of the bolts in the puller kit seem to fit, what size do I need?

Re: 93 harmonic balancer removal question

Only the pulley needs to come off to do the opti. If you cannot gently tap or coax it off, you need to use a jaw puller to remove it.

Re: 93 harmonic balancer removal question

oh really? I have the gm manual and that says to use this kind of puller. If that works though I am more than willing to try it

Re: 93 harmonic balancer removal question

You do know there are two parts, right? The pulley and the hub. The pulley is bolted to the hub. The hub does not need to come off to remove the opti. All truth.

Be sure to mark the pulley relationship to crank shaft hub snout. I scribed mine in two places but you could use paint or marker too. Makes it easier to throw back on afterwards.

Re: 93 harmonic balancer removal question

The pulley can only go on one way, so you can't make it go back on wrong. The spokes of the hub are not symmetrical. The pulley and hub are already marked. The pulley has an arrow and the hub has a cast line on it. Those should be at the same place.

Once the pulley bolts are out, the only thing holding the pulley on is the friction/rust fit of it to the hub.

Re: 93 harmonic balancer removal question

Yes I'm aware there are 2 parts. Like I said, the GM Service manual that I have says to use a puller to get the balancer off. I will try what you suggest next time I get a minute to work on it. Thanks

Re: 93 harmonic balancer removal question

Actually, it does not say this. The instructions are for removing the balancer and hub. Step 1 says to remove the balancer bolts and balancer assembly. No mention of a tool, until step 3 for removing the hub.

What I have on my site is helpful if the balancer is stuck on the hub.

Wow, my mistake, you're right. I just looked in it again, I had been reading it wrong all along. Thanks
