4L60-E Help!!!!
Hey everyone, I had a quick question about my friends 4L60-E. He's got a 1994 Trans Am Automatic that's shifter reads (In order from top to bottom): P R N D 3 2 But no 1. So I took off the upper shifter plate and cut out the plastic stopper but it still won't shift down to first. I was told on this board that all you'd need to do is cut out the stopper and it should go. What should I do? Can I fix it to go into first? Thanks in advance,
Well, the shifter won't go into first at all. You know if you look at the shifter there is a little wheel connected to the bottom? The wheel rides in the little grooves of the gear. When trying to shift from 2 down to 1 the wheel rolls up towards the hump in the gear but won't go down the other side to go into first. It stops in second. Is there something I can readjust? Or do I have to do the way that you showed me above. Thanks
I just did mine last night had the shifter cover off anyway so just went ahead and done it.. just make sure you have the block cut off flush with the shifter mech... but if I am racing I always leave it in OD.... I just wish my car had 2nd gear start so I could take off from a stop..
You will not be able to go to L1 with this shifter. If the car was manufactured with the lower gear ratio offered for that year, I think it was a 2.73 or somewhere around there, GM shifters will only go to D2. The reason for this is the vehicle would exceed acceptable government sound limits if driven in L1. So I'm told by G.M. All you need is a shifter with a L1 position, the valve body is the same in all the f-bodies. This is a good way to determine which gears a car has when shopping. Look for the L1 quadrant for 3:23s. Hope this helps.
There is no difference in the shifter or tranny (except for the tab). All you have to do is remove the tab like you did. If it won't pull all the way down to 1, then adjust the cable like I described. It should work fine. Tons of people have done this, so I know it works.
