6Speed Tranny questions, please help!

I have a 97 6speed. Every now and then, as in maybe once a month or so, it will jump out of 3rd gear. Any idea what could cause this? Its not a issue really, but it bugs me knowing it happens.

Also on really cold days, it seems like its hard to get it in 2nd gear
But once i drive it for a while and it warms up, it seems to be ok, is this normal or is there a problem?

Thanks!

syncros. dont worry about it until it starts grinding gears. it prob will last long time before that happens. but if your board and have nothing to do replace them, and that will stop them from popping out.

Couldn't hurt to check your fluid levels.

Any idea how much money we are talking to replace syncros?

i had the same problem with my last Z. it popped out of third 90% of the time. eventually i got so sick of it and brought it to the shop. i had the tranny taken out, completely rebuilt and reinstalled for $900. i had a new clutch installed at the same time, which they installed for no extra charge. its probably only going to get worse, if i was you i would get it taken care of. its def. no fun "hoping" the car will stay in third!!

oh and by the way... the first trip to the tranny shop they replaced all bearings and syncros. drove the car home and it STILL popped out of third. i brought it back to the shop, had them install a new shift fork, and after that is was PERFECT! kinda sucked i wasted so much $$ on a rebuild, when all it was was the shift fork!!!

Mine does the same thing, about once a month or so, from what I understand its a common problem with these transmissions. I wouldn't worry about it!

The 3rd gear side of your 3-4 syncro is mashed a bit and your dogs are prolly broken, your blocker ring is prolly worn too and 3rd might have some damage. I went through this exact problem over a year ago. I had the syncro and blockers rings replaced, didn't fix it. I replaced 3rd gear and replaced the NEW 3-4 syncro and blocker rings because they were damaged again by the 3rd gear being bad. And your 2nd gear just sounds like a worn syncro with maybe some bad dogs. This is just a speculation, you really can't know until your inside.

Your looking about $100 a syncro, $50 for a pair of blocker rings, and $150 for 3rd gear (if its damaged). So more than likely your looking about $300 at the least (just the syncros and blocker rings for 1-2 and 3-4) to fix your problems completely, plus labor (usually goes for about $200 at a good tranny shop). But FIX your problem, don't patch it up. If you just buy the syncros and blocker ring and 3rd gear is damaged, prepare for those new parts to wear pretty fast!!
