dude...4.10 gears in ur auto will be quicker, but man..u'll be suckin down gas cuz u'll be revvin pretty high on the highway. id go with 3.73. thats what i had in my old '95 z auto. as far as the tight turn whine sound...a bottle of gm limited slip axle lube additive should do the trick. it did for me. it will reduce noise in the rear end.

i had the 3.23 gears stock and bought an auburn pro series carrier w/ 3.73s. it did make a difference. a few tenths difference. i was surprised myself cuz i had a few friends doubting the gear change wouldnt do much.

Your friend probably said that b/c he had 3.42s and went to 4.10s. Going to 3.73s wouldnt have been a big change for him. Trust me, 3.73s are the highest you want to go with an A4.

I got some Strange 3.73's for the 2 series carrier and a Ratech install kit from Thunder. All together, about $315 shipped. The shop that did the install charged $312 here. I did find shops that'd do it cheaper, but this one in particular had a great rep. YMMV.

Will it solve the noise problem? No idea. It's impossible to say what might be wrong over the internet. If you do get some gears, make sure you let the shop know what's going on, it may be something as simple as needing new gear oil & GM limited slip diff fluid, then again it may not.

Back to the 4.10's - the 3.73's are bad enough with the rpm's cruising @ 65-70. I wouldn't want to deal with 4.10's, personally.

Another thing you might discover (as I did), the higher rpm's might reveal that you have a vibeshaft problem. I never noticed it with the 2.73's, but there's no mistaking it now! I got a custom made steel one from www.pstds.com shipped for $227 Similar in price with the 1LE - but not weak aluminum. It's not here yet, but I'll post when it's in.

prolly your best bet on not having any gear whine is to buy GM gears. they made alot better than any other company u will find. cost a helluva lot more than aftermarket, but u wont have the gear whine. buying a cheap or used gear.......u'll most likely get whine.

With my 4.10's in an A4 head/cam car that runs 12.25, I get 18+ MPG.
I cross the stripe @6100 RPMs, in 3rd gear, at 111 MPH...With 26" tall tires. I cruise at 2300 RPMs, in 4th gear, at 60 MPH.

The 4.10s are good for a 1.67 60 ft. time in a full weight '93 Z with a completely stock suspension, other than the front sway bar removal...On 26"x11.5" ET Streets.

I went from 3.23 to 4.10s and dropped 3/10's...When the engine was completely stock. BTW, the car went a 12.82 @ 106 MPH with a 93,000 mile LT1 that had never had a valvecover off, and still had exhaust manifolds. The only REAL mods were the 3200 stall, and the 4.10 gears.
