3/8 or 7/16 ?

Just had a wierd thought: As I recall back in 97, I purchased some Crower SA 1.6RRs. I believe it said 7/16 stud. So, does my 97 LT1, stock heads have 3/8 or 7/16 Rocker studs? And if they are indeed 3/8, how would that affect the Valve train if I installed the RRs that supposedly require a 7/16 Stud?

I ask this, because I do not trust any mechanics to notice any discrepancies that pose possible problems. Too much experience where they just throw on what they have on hand.

Thx.

Stock rocker studs are 3/8". Installing 7/16" studs will make a more stable valvetrain.

Was checking out the particular part no. for the crowers, and one said for 7/16 and the other said 3/8. I assume that I have the RRs for the 3/8stud, but.....are you saying that the RR will fit either size stud? I.e.it doesn't make any difference which stud size, that the RR will fit just fine?

Been a long time since I messed with the RRs. I know that the 7/16 would be a tad stonger---I assume that the screw in part is 7/8 and the rr part is 7/16 so that you needn't do any machining the holes?

Just curious about the size of the stud vis a vis the rocker ever since a couple of rockers came off the valves and kissed my pistons.

my bad: I meant the screw-in part of the stud would be 3/8 and the mounting size would be 7/16, right?

Its one or the other, you cant just put 7/16 rockers on 3/8 studs or they will be loose.

I personally would swap out the studs to 7/16 if you plan on spinning over 6k a lot. ---

Since I believe that the part no. info was incorrect, and that I indeed have 3/8 RRs, then it certainly wouldn't be worth it to buy new RRs to fit a 7/16 stud----not for the price of these damn crowers anyway.

Besides, I just have a 6 grand cam anyway.

thx.

No, the hole in the head is already 7/16", and the factory studs step it down to 3/8". You can just buy some ARP 7/16" studs and they will screw right in to the head without modification.

Thank you--very interesting that they would step it down, perhaps there weren't that many offerings for the 7/16 RRs----who knows.

Just got off the horn with Crower, they confirmed my belief that the RRs that I have are for 3/8 and not 7/16s. Can't always, rarely actually, believe what you read.
