Whew. At least there's one other. I think I' gonna start a new thread to find out who is still running this unit.

As I remember, when i had my LT1 car (2002-2003) and i was in the processes of replacing mine i talked with a NAPA manager who was a big GM and he said that AC Delco had a huge batch of defect Optis that were produced for a while. I assume he meant one that were shelved. Now wether or not they were 92-94 or 95-97 i have no idea. Could it be this guy got a hold of all these defect Optis and is making a killing suckering everybody to buy'em? or (like someone else mentioned) maybe there is a chinese (no offense) company like "Pro Comp" thats manufactures cheap crap parts and sells'em. Who knows...

Well, I guess I'm the latest to get screwed by this guy. I bought one of his opti's some time back as a spare. Recently I had to chase some issues with my car and swapped in the spare, then found the real problem which wasn't the opti. I fired it up and was greeted with DTC P0336, indicating the low res signal from the opti wasn't up to snuff. Sooo, I swapped my Delco unit back in. The DTC went away and I "magically" picked up some power. I guess I'll try to contact All Ignition tomorrow and try to get my $$$ back. If I get my $$ back, then we're cool. If not then the BBB, Ebay and Paypal are going to hear from me.

Good luck with that. I asked to get my money back on a never used one and was told they only exchange for warranty and do not refund $$.
He told me I could probably sell it for more than I bought it for...yeah right and rip someone else off...not my style.

I'm kind of on the AutoZone bandwagon lately....but they have a stock replacement listed on their site for $120

Standard Opti

And the MSD opti is only $155

Just for the sake of clarification, these are only the replacement opti caps and rotor buttons.

bad opti

well i guess i read this thread a day late. i bought a opti from these people aswell and after installing it the car will start but it surges at an idle and is throwing a P0336 code saying my crank posision sensor is bad. so i bought a new one same thing. i checked everything and all is o.k. it has never thrown this code before the new opti. so im pretty sure its the opti. well i guess trying to save a few dollars has bit me in the *** again. i ordered mine over the phone not through ebay so i dont have a leg to stand on. we should all get together and start a class action law suit on these people for consumer fraud saying these are oem ac delco parts. if anybody on here reads this and knows how to approach this let me know. i will check in to this and repost in a few days or so.

While there have been "some issues" with the MSD Opti, I still believe the MSD Opti distributor is best option to go with. Once I upgraded my MSD rotor screws (allen socket-heads & flat-washers) w/ thread-locker, it has been trouble-free.

Also, I added some timing advance using the MSD timing adjustment screw and my car picked-up over a tenth in the 1/4.

i did a lot of searching and reading on this subject and there seems to be alot of related problems from a bad opti and / or the wiring harness. if this is in fact not true there are alot of informed people posting this problem. any other sugestions would be great. this problem did not exist untill i put the new opti in. it has a low end miss and surges and throws the ckp code P0336. i have installed new ICM,coil,CKP,wires and plugs and opti. i have rechecked everything several times and found nothing else wrong.

YES!!! You are correct - about the ground. I just finished reading the section in the GM service manual about DTC P0336. See the following link, third post, for the section from the service manual (http://www.z28.com/forum/showthread....ighlight=p0336). Read the first two paragraphs as well as the conditions that will set the DTC. For P0336 the PCM looks at singnals from the CKP, the low resolution and high resolution signals from the opti. If the optical sensor in the opti is not operating properly, it will send incorrect "readings" to the PCM which can cause the PCM to set DTC P0336, cause backfires, loss of power...... We know the drill. Center field .

Cheers

so after all this there are only two guys that have not had a problem with this unit? I bought one awhile ago from the all ignition place (i believe), but have not installed it yet. Should I even bother or should I just send it back saying everything basically that has been said here?

All Ignition will not give you your money back. They only exchange the unit that is bad with another potentially bad unit. Use the opti if you have to and hope that it works. If it doesn't, pull it out, clean it up, drop it in a fish tank and take a picture. Show us all how to really get the opti wet .
