10 mpg after hot cam

Is this normal? I have programming from PCMforless, and new plugs and wires. Should I get a new o2 sensor? I had a blown head gasket and was burning coolant. I was getting 15-17 mpg before the cam. Thanks for the help.

No, that is not normal.....though a lot depends on your drving. If the gas pedal never comes off the floor...yeah, you'll get crappy gas mileage. A lot of guys complaining of horrible gas mileage after a major mod don't factor in that they're now giving their friends 8-9 "around the block" WOT rides a day showing off the new power....

That being said, my LT4HC, 3.73 geared, 3,000 stall, stage II head motor even with my incredibly heavy foot averaged 16.7 mph....quite a difference from yours.

I'd recommend talking to Brian about sending him some "logs" of you running around town...hope you have a laptop and cable and letting him see what is going on. Bryan is great at that type of diagnosis

I thought that was my problem the first time, but for the last week i've been driving without crossing 2K rpms, seriously. Its been hell, but i really wanted to see what is going on. I'll log a couple runs on Datamaster and send them to Bryan. I hope he doesn't charge me more! lol

Edit...I do have an exhaust leak, but i'm pretty sure its on the passenger side collector, and thats after the o2 sensor.

I Just looked at a log of Datamaster I did, and my BLM's are at 128 for both sides at WOT, and the o2's are in the 900's. I'm guessing its the part throttle tuning that needs help then, right? Will VE master help me out, or is that for 93 cars only?

Cool

Coolant will destroy your O2 sensor.

Seems like my car doesn't get much more than 10-12 mpg right now either.....i do have an exhaust leak behind the 02's as well.....might have an exhaust leak before because of the slip in tube that goes around the steering knuckle......

part throttle and that exhaust leak are part of your problem. I had a damaged flange on my header and I thought it wouldn't effect o2/ exhaust flow too badly either. Well, I went through the process of trying to fix it like 5 times before I finally got it right and I can say that it was absolutely worth 3mpg.
