Whats your opinion on cold temp thermostat ?
Whats your opinion on cold temp thermostat ?
My car has a running temp of about 175 not up around 210 where my buddy told me it should be. So it must of had a cold temp thermostat put in it. Are these bad for the engine ??? I think it might have had a power programer used on it which is fine b/c it is running great. I'm having the spark knock sensor replaced by a mechanic soon. If the battery or ecu is cut off could I possibly lose the power programer stuff ?? Some feed back would be cool fellaz.
Greetings from Graceland! Hopefully things up in NashVegas are going well for you. If you haven't already done so, check up on the Middle Tennessee F-Body Association (www.mtfba.org)
As for your question, if you are running a lower temp thermostat, you won't see much difference unless you also do something to kick the fans on sooner. You can do that with a programmer, or by simply adding a manual fan switch.
If you are running a lot cooler than stock, then your guess is good that a programmer of some sort was used to kick the fans on sooner and take advantage of the lower temp thermostat.

From what I hear, LS1s are unlike other engines as far as what temp they like. Iron engines don't like the heat soak, a 160 or 180 would work great, but the LS1's like the higher temp. Several dynos have proved this. Like when I dynod my car, for example, the more runs I did consecutively, the more power she made.
So yeah, that's what I've always heard concerning LS1s.

simply because things happen concurrently does not mean that one caused the other...
according to multiple Autotap sessions, my car NEVER runs above 200 degrees EVER in any weather.....i have a stock thermostat with a hypertech telling the computer to kick the fans on for a 160 degree 'stat. this alone knocked about 20 degrees off my hottest stock temperature since the stock fan tuning turns fan 1 on at something like 219 degrees!!!

hypertech 180 t-stat tuning: fan 1, on at 194, off at 185. fan 2, on at 204, off at 195.
