Whats a better intake?
I was wondering what intake is better either a whisper airlid or the K&N Fuel Injection performance kit? Would the Ultra Z hood help for a better intake charge with the Fuel Injection kit?

Maddboost, I tossed between the volant, the lids and the FIPK. I went with the FIPK because it seemed to make good sense. On my SS, there was only a tiny crack of 3/4 inch by about a foot opening for air to enter. The lid allows for better flow, the volant and FIPK allow for more flow. I think the FIPK is superior because of K&N's filter technology. Plus, it looks real nice on the car. For sure, the lids are an inexpensive upgrade. Got my FIPK through this sites group purchase with TByrne. Installation was easy. Take the MAF screen out while your in there (watch those little sensor wires). Just my 2 cents.

To me the K&N set up is butt ugly & I would never put it on my car. That being said from what I'm seeing dyno wise the $300 for the K&N set up is not making much if any more hp than a $100-$150 lid. I'd got with the lid & add FTRA to it.

Second, as for comparing the rwhp gains to a lid. Typically lids are in the 9-13 range and the FIPK is typically in the 18-25 range generally exceeding 20 rhwp.
As far as ugly, I wouldn't consider putting on a FTRA, which looks like something left over from the HVAC at a construction site

Plus the FIPK/Volant are desigend to take advantage of the engineered air flows in the f-body. While the !FRA and FTRA canablize the cooling air flow system. Putting the cooling system at jeopardy and exposing the air intake system to road debris and water.
Good Luck

Most of the dyno's I've personally seen have been right where a lid is. & As for the FTRA you don't see it unlike the ugly K&N set up. Plus when I had FTRA on the SS I never had any cooling problems at all. I rather pull cold air from outside the car than hot air from the engine bay.
I've yet to see anyone report a FIPK dyno with less than 18rwhp over stock. I personally got 22 rwhp.
As for air flow temp, that is one advantage that tbe FTRA has over an open filter system or just a lid. At idle it will draw ambient air, as it should since it is canabalizing the cooler air that is there to support the engine cooling system. But once the car is in motion the the air at the stock lid or an open element will quickly drop to ambient.
As for your personal experience, I believe you're up in the Napa area. Cooling is less of an issue for you. For a daily driver sitting in traffic in 110 degrees in Sacramento, it is something that needs to be considered.
Performance modding has to take into account all of your options, your environment and what you do with the car. Despite what I said about canabalizing the air cooling sytem; during the summer I run an FIPK with a modified stock heat shield with the !FRA, just to grab a little more air in the staging lanes and at the light
During the winter I go back to the K&N heat shield - Sacramento doesn't have the best drainage system in the world and you never know when you will suddenly find yourself in water up to your axle.
