What makes an SS an SS?

If you ask me, neither one are actually a ram air setup. They're just cold air setups from the factory. A true ram air has a sealed intake that, at higher speeds, can achieve a minor supercharging effect. The WS6 & SS don't have sealed intake assemblies. So, technically they aren't ram air...whether they have "ram air" stickers or not.

So the Bilstien shocks, larger front sway bar, and low profile tires are for looks. These are standard on a 98 SS and I thought that they were for handling

That's about it. And the SS stickers give at least 3 hp too.
The SS package was an APPEARANCE PACKAGE.
17" Wheels.
Air induction hood. (not forced air - The hood doesn't seal to the lid)
Rear spoiler.
Different (slightly better) cat back.
...AND SS emblems.

17" wheels are an appearance mod. Most FBody racers run 16's on the road course and autocrossing. 15" drag slicks are better than a 17" wheel too if you want to get really technical.
I still say that as a genaral rule the SS package is an appearance package with special optional upgrades available. From the air filter to the rearend, they have the same drivetrain components as the Z28.
Engine - Identical
Transmission - Identical
Rearend - Identical(for most years, I've been told 98's had Auburns)
Exhaust - Identical(with the exception of a slightly different cat back)
Brakes - Identical

Nice list but what year is it for? There were changes made over the life of the program.
Our base non Y2Y 98 SS came with Bilstiens not DeCarbons.

first of all the list i showed was for 2002 models camaro ss. And yes in 2002 they did have better suspension. As for the tires 17 inch rims with low profile tires is not an acceleration upgrade it is a handling upgrade. Wider, lower profile tires are better for handling because the tire sidewall does not flex as much during hard cornering. When you look at the facts saying it is just a appearance package is wrong. ALso the exhuast does help performance too.
I just purchased a '99 SS , I am the 4th owner of the car.
It has no stickers whatsoever on the doors, no original window
sticker, no paperwork. I called Chevrolet with the Vin # &
they said it has only the "appearance & performance
package". I have called & e-mailed SLP, left messages
to get the cars build # ?? No response from them. I guess
I hope mine is a true SS!

i just read your post again and realixed you have no stickers at all. I thought you mean no slp stickers but it you have no codes it gets a little harder. Im sure there is a way to tell from your vin. Also look for the book.

A. none of them are functional ram air setups. the ram air affect doesn't begin to take affect until around 200 mph. so even if they were it wouldn't matter.
B. before people start compairing one setup to another.... back it up with numbers. and no halfa**ed my friend has a physics degree and he said..... rip the hood off a ws6 and slap a ss hood on it and do some testing.
you can't compair an ss to a ws6 side by side. the engines have to much variance for that. you have to use the same engine and frame making only one alteration (that which you are testing) to get an idea of loss/gain.
Does anyone really think that either hood is better? Neither are sealed and both flow almost the same. The only difference is the route the air takes. Look into a WS6 nostril, there is just as much resistance in a WS6 hood as there is in a SS hood. There is no void in the atmosphere in a SS hood. The fact that it loops around changes nothing.
Why didn't GMHTP or Super Chevy or some magazine just compair the Z28 vs. the SS in acceleration and handling? It'd be much easier than arguing. I'll stick with the Z28 is just as quick as a SS/Trans Am/WS6/Formula/Firehawk/blah blah blah blah blah
EDIT: I also don't see the point of paying like $5K on top of a Z28 for some AFTERMARKET company to do nothing other make it look a little nicer. Granted, I think SS's are great, and I don't think anyone is stupid for buying one, I just wish Chevrolet would have made it themselves. They could have thrown a little more power in as well
Now if only they'd make the base Vette have like 450hp they could make an SS with 400 or even 375 (well, if we still had Camaro's around). I mean look at Ford, you have the GT which is good for someone who wants a "quick" car, but nothing insane for a decent price. Then you have the crazy Cobra for like $10K more and over 100 more horsepower.

The fastest LS1 F-bodys are the low to no-option "stripper" cars. Hardtop, roll-up windows, manual locks...the weight savings was prolly at least 60-70 lbs over a fully-loaded SS/WS6. I bought an SS hood because of the looks and it was lighter than my steel hood. I didn't even bother with the airbox (which would have interfered with my nitrous 'noids anyway).

All LS1's are fast some are faster than others, big deal.
But park a SS next to a Z28 and see which one everyone looks at.
I would rather have a limited production and numberd car than a regular Z28. It would be a different story if the SS had no SLP options though then they look more like the Z28.
