Question pinging problem

My car has been pinging for a couple days now. When it started I had about a few gallos of gas left, and it was 91 octane cheap gas. So i filled i up with 91 octane from 76. It still pings, but not as much or as bad. I am going to try mixing some 100 octane racing gas with some 91 octane gas. Im gonna try and make a 95-96 octane mix. I also have the predator so I want enough octane to advance the timing. Will this work. It pings with factory tune and predator tune.

What scan tool are you using to monitor your knock retard?

The predator, it can read live data. When I get on it the knock sensor reads sometimes up to 5 or more.

retard the timing and see if it goes away.

With the predator you can only retard the timing at WOT. It pings at any throtle. It is raining over here right now, so I cant test WOT, but I did retard timing at WOT. The pings noise is much less than a few days ago. Its wierd I have no clue what it is. My guess is that this 91 octane here in California is borderline for what the car really needs, or somthing.

Mine also pings, but only at WOT. How do you retard the timing? Is it only done electronically? What's involved? Thanks

You can retard the pinging with the Predator, only @ WOT.

PhantomTA: Here is an example of when it will ping. When I am driving normally, the car shifts from 3 to 4 and I give it a little throttle during the shift. When it shifts from 3 to 4 it goes from less load to more load, on th eengine, becasue of the gearing. ANd then it pings. It doesnt do it all of the time.

I'm gonna go to the station with 100 octane at the pump, and mix it with 91. If it works, i'll be getting the full potential out of my car. At first I am gonna use more 100 than 91. But after that i just want to get around 95 94 octane, I'll be using the predator and bumping up the timing as much as possible, 10%, so i'll need the octane.

If you start mixing any fuels, make sure you do not use any 'leaded' fuel... it will ruin parts on your car. Including the 4 o2 sensors and the cats. That can get expensive.

I had detonation/KR problems. I attacked the problem from all sides and it is gone except on the very hottest days. The combo of things I did that got rid of it:
FRA
TB Bypass
Free thermostat mod (160*)
Auto fan mod to get the fans on sooner.
PCV update to get control of the oil.

The idea is to cool the combustion chambers with lower coolant temps and cooler incoming air. Also if you have any oil control problems, that will cause detonation in 2 ways... 1) Even a tiny amount of oil lowers the A/F mix octane drasticly & 2) Burnt oil speeds carbon build up in the chamber which increases compression and heat in the cylinder.

Some other things that aid in curing detonation:
Water wetter
Cooler heat range spark plugs
Higher octane
Cleaning the carbon from the top cylinder
Richening A/F mix
Retarding timing

Good luck
Dave
