Ordering a cam... (pretty detailed)

yes i know.. been asked a million times... but atleast im going to be pretty specific

Ok. Well i wrecked my 00 z 3 weeks ago, im doing motor/tranny swap into my 98 v6 camaro...

Well, i already have strange 12 bolt with upgraded posi and 4.10 gears. strange HD driveshaft, g-force upgrade kit for t56, spec stage3 clutch, steel flywheel, hooker headers/y-pipe, hooker catback, getting ls6 intake, have lid, getting smooth bellows, well i think thats it(mainly for drivetrain/go fast mods)... im trying to decide on what cam to get. im looking at a few from thunder racing, and i cant decide! I want something that even a moron can tell i have a cam, im not afraid of car shacking, etc... ill actually love it less work to do in back seat... shh i didnt say that! just kidding! as of now(with stock rear end 3.42 gears 10 bolt, etc) i got 18-19 city 23-25 hwy/city(80%/20%, give or take) of coarse its going to drop, im just trying to figure out how much mpg....

1) Thunder Racing Custom Camshaft - 224/224 .563/.563 112 LSA 1700-6600 RPM Power Band. Excellent mid-range & high RPM power. Requires computer tuning on automatic transmission cars. Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended.

2) Thunder Racing Custom Camshaft - 224/224 .563/.563 114 LSA 1700-6600 RPM Power Band. Excellent mid-range & high RPM power. Requires computer tuning on automatic transmission cars. Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended.

3) Thunder Racing Custom Camshaft - 220/220 .551/.551 112 LSA 1500-6500 RPM Power Band. Computer Tuning Required with automatic transmission cars. A very well balanced camshaft that makes excellent power across the entire RPM range. Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended.View Dyno Graph

4) Thunder Racing Custom Camshaft - 220/220 .551/.551 114 LSA 1500-6500 RPM Power Band. Computer Tuning Required with automatic transmission cars. A very well balanced camshaft that makes excellent power across the entire RPM range. Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended.

the last two... the dyno graphs.. i dont like how it starts dropping at 5k, the first too stay strong till the end... iknow the first two are more agressive, but HOW much more agressive? and what kind of mpg should i expect with these??? with the 4.10s also... i drive like a granny most of the time.. i dont care what mpg when im on it... hell i got below 10 stock sometimes lol... but like i said.. 95% of the time i used to get 18+ mpg city....

and if these arnt great, im open to suggestions.. i have 9-10k for the swap, already have the rear end... also LSA 112 and 114, from what i heard 114 is smoother.... i barely know what the cam # mean, i knwo the basic idea, but nothing special. I posted here first bc theres a lot of ppl on here with knowledge! but if i cant get anything i guess ill call up TR next week once i get the money...

thanks MANY i know its long, but i will RLY appreciate anything!

Re: Ordering a cam... (pretty detailed)

yeah im wondering the same thing...except im going with stage 2 heads from Thunder Racing and 3.73s and mines an A4 so im thinking of a 3200 stall or something. I have the same goals as him, i want people to know i have a cam and im not worried about the rough idle or anything but i dont want a significant drop in gas mileage, i know it will drop but i dont want it to drop a whole lot. Im also looking at the same cams from Thunder Racing so if anyone could help out id appreciate it.

With a 12 bolt and spec 3, I would look into a little bit bigger of a cam. But if you want a reliable not to harsh of a cam tr224 is what you want. But thats just me. If you want a more aggressive of a cam 231/231 or tsp's 231/237 would be a good choice.

i would call thunder racing up. they should be able to help you out. they may be able to pick a cam for your setup. a tune should help out on fuel economy too. i think half the importance is to match your cam to your heads.
