oil all over the underside of hood

Ok, be easy with me ..... but I have a stock 99SS and noticed a good amount of oil under the hood. The engine is nice and clean but the underside of the hood around the scoop area is wet with oil? Only thing I can think of is when I was getting on the interstate the other day, I down shifted to 2nd from wot in 3rd instead of going to 4th. Any suggestions and do I need to clean off anything else in the engine , thottle body etc?
car is fairly new for me and I'm still getting familiar with the M6.

if there's a good bit on the hood, oil is probably leaking somewhere and getting on the belts and being flung up at the hood.

that would be my first guess

Do you see oil leaking from anywhere?

My first guess would be power steering fluid.

Chack all of your fluid levels and see which one is low.

i would say take a look at your power steering pump. And just a side note. If you were at WOT and accidentally downshifted instead of going up a gear you should definately listen closely to your motor for any ticking. If there is any more ticking than normal then pull the valve covers and take a look at your pushrods. They like to bend when missing a shift like that.

Thanks for the insight, no ticking noises and no extra oil on anything else? Maybe just a fluke thing. I thought I read somewhere that under heavy pressure the oil can come out the PCV or something?
Anyway thanks agian for the ideas i'll look at those areas to be sure.
