Tires and tune - definitely.
I wouldn't advise running heavy or wide open until then too. You're probably running considerably lean (not good). Timing will be close given you have a '98. But, there'll be some power to pick up between 4,000 & 5,200 RPMs. Given those two things (AFR and timing), it's no wonder you're turning 13's on street tires.
As for the tires, you should be fine as long as you're sensible about it (ie no 5500rpm clutch drops after you warm 'em up).

6500 sounds a little high to me for a 224 cam'd car. what gears do you got? stock 3:42's? lower control arms and air bags for the back and you should also disconnect the sway bar end links to help the car transfer more weight to the rear tires.
and, are you spinning badly and thats why only 2.1x sixty? or launching softly? how are you launching and how is the car reacting?
