mass air flow sensor question
mass air flow sensor question
hey...question for you guys...well, explanation first.
ive noticed my car (2000 z28 6spd) has been bogging down at 2500rpm, then surging back up after 3k rpm. only mods i have is a ls1motorsports lid w k&n filter, and SLP LM exhaust. Dyno results shows its running pretty lean 14.5-15 a/f ratio at WOT. Well, before i start to throw parts at it.....i disconnected the MAF and drove around for a bit. The engine accelerated smooth at any throttle postition. I reconnected the MAF....back to the same thing..bogging and surging power.
My question is....... bad MAF???
I've been thinking about purchasing SLP's MAF if indeed my stock one is crapped out. Any thoughts???
p.s. I did some research on this before the post....however i couldnt find anything with a good answer to the problem. I have noticed that other people have experienced the same engine bog and surging in their ls1.

Disconnecting your MAF will send your computer into "limp home" mode. It is a pre-determined paramiter that is good enough to get you where you need to go. If your car runs better like that, then I say yea, your having a MAF problem. Easiest way to tell is to borrow another MAF and see if it is fixed. Pretty much all aftermarket MAFs are junk. In my particular case the SLP MAF slowed me down 3 tenths and 3 mph. If you plan on getting the car dyno tuned with the aftermarket MAF, then OK, but otherwise, see if you can find someone selling a stocker. Stock MAF's aren't a restriction until 420+ RWHP.
I bought the 85mm MAF from SLP and it seemed to help SOTP. Of course I also added a SLP Lid and a Green air filter at the same time so I don't really know what worked best. The SLP MAF was only $175 I think.
Re: mass air flow sensor question
Your best bet would be to just run in without the MAF. Unlike most cars camaros have both a MAF and a MAP sensor. Which allows them to run in what is called Speed Density mode in which the ECM uses inputs from the MAP along with other sensors to calculate your A/F mixture. Many people have taken them out to get rid of the restriction. However unless you've got some serious motor work it will really pose any restriction problems.
Re: mass air flow sensor question
that's a temporary band-aid.....not even close to a solution
i like the "swap to a good stocker" idea...it will help determine if it is the maf

Get some spray electrical cleaner and rinse it off really good and try it again. When dirty it won't work right.

As stated above try and clean your maf first. A good contact cleaner will do it. You can have a problem with the KN filter after oiling it the excess will get onto the maf.
When you disconnect the maf you put your car into the low octane table which also runs at less advance then the high octane table. Check on a tuning board to see what is happening when you disconnect your maf.
I would stay away from aftermarket mafs unless you are running stock. The granatelli tricks the computer into advancing the spark and from what I understand cannot be tuned. I have heard bad things about the SlP. I am running a GM 85 mm truck maf.

More info please!
OK, a couple questions for ya.
1. How long has this been happening?
2. Is your SES light on?
3. When you say that it smoothes out over 3k rpm, is that at part throttle or WOT?
Could be an O2 sensor going bad, I could tell you some more if you answer these questions.

Re: mass air flow sensor question
Uhh.. running without the MAF will trigger the SES light. Best bet, as already stated, borrow another MAF and try it out and don't waste money on any after market MAF, use that money to get a cam or something else.
