it's pretty commonly accepted that the money you'll spend is NOT worth an aftermarket MAF on a lightly modded car. i've even heard of people having problems with the aftermarket ones (particularly A4 cars, which take signals from the MAF to control line pressure).

Re: MAF sensor opinions?

so far it has long tube headers, lid, borla cat back,
would installing a "performance" throttle body be more harm than good?

MAF=not worth it.
BBK TB=?
thanks

DOn't bother with TB or MAF until you are making a ton of power, they will be very very minimal gains. You can get the LS6 or LSX intake manifold for a little more money but it would give more power.

Re: MAF sensor opinions?

the maf is pretty much worthless

the tb is pretty much the same untill you get over 400hp

if you want you could port the tb, there is a thread on that recently, i listed some good info as well as a good diagram of why it is helpfull at part throttle.

as for the intakes...the LS6 intake is a dyno proven 10 hp gain on bolt on cars. but the FAST intake only showed 1 or 2 hp more on a 400hp crate motor.
FAST is a major overkill on a bolt on LS1....and WAY overpriced.

I'm not sure about how '98's respond, me and 4 other of my friend have had very good gains with the Pace LS-6 vv MAF, but we all have '01-02's

I gained 1 mph and .1 tenth in the 1/4.

You can ask others, but the only real way is to try in out, all cars respond different.

Good Luck

Re: MAF sensor opinions?

MAF's are a major waste of $. Stockers can go to 450 rwhp with no problems. Ported TB's are ok, but not what you need at this point. Like others said, getting the intake swapped out will be your next best bet. LS-6's are going for fairly cheap, but there are a few people selling LS-X's also. The LS-X won't shine all that well on a bolt-on car, but it will perform as well, if not a little better than the LS-6. Plus it'll already be ther for the future.

Re: MAF sensor opinions?

Unless you get a killer deal on the MAF and know somone who's willing to tune with an aftermarket MAF on the car, I'd avoid it altogether, or look into the z06 MAF, it's closest to stock. Throttle body isn't necessary until you're making 450+ rwtq/rwhp, could probably go higher than that, maybe 500+. You'd be better off with a ported stock unit.
