MAF questions
I was looking into getting either an SLP MAF, or the Granatelli MAF. I was looking at the Gran web site, and they say there are disadvantages to home porting, or different ends. They say the computer will unlearn these changes after about 200 miles, but the Gran MAF is calibrated, and will not be changed by the computer. Is this true?>
They also say that porting your own will cause your engine to run lean. Are they saying that adding a Gran MAF won't make your car run any leaner? Would it be psooible to use the power programming of a hypertech with a Gran, because the MAF wouldn't add to the hypertech's lean pushing program?
Also, If I were to buy a Granatelli MAF, is there any need to get polished ends??.....or do the ends come with the MAF, and there is no need to modify the ends.
The site also mentions getting one that is calibrated for 'cold air induction' setups. Would a lid and filter with FRA fit into this category?
Thanks much.
Also, has anyone tried their lid as well?

Need more info. On some years the GMAF worked better. I.e. 1999. While on other years they weren't as effective. Post your sig so that the members with the same year car as yours can related their experience with these mafs.

Here's sharing my bit of experience. I did an excellent job of porting my stock MAF. I even kept the screen in, which made it tough while grinding out the center fin and polishing the ID smooth. I seemed to feel a little difference in the car and that was great until I added an SLP Lid. Then I started getting SES lights from my O2 sensors detecting a lean condition. I figure that I must have been just on the edge of lean with the port job, and the lid added just enough flow to put me out of acceptable range. My fuel trim was significantly higher than usual trying to adjust. I bought an SLP MAF because it is half the cost of the Gran, and I am very happy with it. No more SES lights, but I have not checked to see if my fuel trim is back to normal. I like to assume
I will tell you that the SLP MAF has much more cross-sectional flow are than the stock MAF, even more than when you port it. Hope that helps, sorry I don't have any experience with a Gran.
P.S. I live in NY, so the problem with a home ported MAF was not just climate related.

The Gran MAF comes with ends.I caught a good deal off of E-bay when some guy ordered a Gran MAF and SLP MAF ends.He said that his MAF came with new ends.Good luck.

I would stay away from the Granitelli MAS, reposrts from my programmer is they won't program a car with one in it. It just won't work right. I'd try either the SLP MAS (calibrated $159) or the Pace MAS (also calibrated).

The Granatelli MAF sensor is a probably a better bet, just because it already has the housing ends and restricts less air flow. The price is slightly on the outrageous side and the biggest thing I was concerned about was the OBD-II system in our cars and the whole "learning" of bolt-ons. One reason I chose the Granatelli is because of the calibration and the hope that it wouldn't be able to be bypassed by the computer. After putting it in, I couldn't really "feel" the supposed 14hp increase, but I guess you'll have that. One thing I would recommend is that if you get a Hypertch, that you NOT use the "Power tuning" with the aftermarket MAF sensor. You'll lose HP in doing so. The programmer did a lot for me since I changed gears, had to adjust my shift points, changed thermostat, and I needed to increase shift firmness after the converter was put in. If I were you...I'd save the money and not buy an aftermarker MAF sensor, and save up for the Vigilante. It's THE MOST noticeable mod you could do to your car (this side of nitrous or supercharger), and it'll be there ALL the time for a lot cheaper than a supercharger.
