the only thing "not turning the track times" is the drivers. Just cuz the drivers cant handle the power of the Viper doesnt mean its slow. with 500 HP in the Viper it should be right around 122MPH at the track. The Z06 on the other hand is closer to 114ish not much to compare there, except drivers who cant handle the cars properly. The OLD 450HP Vipers trap about 118MPH while still faster than a Z06 its a better match. And when you start comparing the finely tuned suspensions of cars that are meant to handle great,it becomes more subjective than fact (hence: what the driver likes). When comparing cars power look at lbs./HP or trap speed.

BUT........speed doesn't win races.

TIME is what wins the race, and even if the 'Vette can't pull ~120 mph in the 1/4 mile, if it is any lighter than the Viper, and if it can hook better and pull off a better time, then it will take the win in a race. I could care less how fast the car is going when it crosses the line.

Supposedly this has been done by others as well. Theoretically the new one will be capable of even faster once in a life time runs like that. And from what I have seen and read of the new Viper, and 11.9x already beats it. It is in the low 12's I believe 12.2-12.4 on average. Also, the Z06 is much roomier inside and has better interior fit and finish than the Viper, while costing tons less and getting better gas mileage while doing all of this. I have always dreamed about owning a Viper like most kids and guys, but I would honestly consider a new Z06 over a new Viper. Assuming I had the money that is. I think you may see a Viper vs. Z06 shootout in Road and Track in 06' in which the ZO6 wins, unless of course Viper steps up the game before then. If you read the old shootout, the Corvette basically one every category except for raw speed and just barely lost that one.
The viper is faster then The Z06 "99up ", I have seen road test's for a viper , running a 11.6-11.8 .......The people driving them are the problem ....A viper was running at our loacl track once and the crappy driver couldnt break a 13.0 in it .....

like i said we all know which car is faster (Viper). Its up to the driver to do the drivin. If the Corvette driver is better than the Viper driver, than yes it has a chance, but what do you think would happen if the Viper driver was awsome and the Z06 driver was ****ty? Thats an easy recipe for rapeage. THATS why i post trap speeds, leave the times up to the drivers.

I understand all that, thats why I quoted the shootout times. These comparison articles are done by a relatively good driver, but the key is that they are done by the SAME driver. Therefore they are a good comaprison of the cars.

but that still doesnt show what the car is capable of. It only shows what its capable of WITH that driver (who might be better suited at driving Corvettes)

Ok, you said you have seen a Viper run 11.6-11.8. I can believe this as I have seen one and heard of other 02' Z06 Corvettes running 11.9x and supposedly an 11.8 (I cant confirm that one). SO it is entirely possible that a new Z06 with 50-100 more hp could run an 11.6 or faster with a great driver and perfect conditions. Im just impressed that the Vette is into Viper territory, never really expected that.

Gen I (L98) heads and (I believe) cam will NOT interchange with the GenII (LT1).

The Gen I heads definitely won't work due to the LT1's reverse flow cooling.

I don't think the Gen I cams will work because of the needed LT1 specific water pump / Opti drives.

Thanks for the clarification. I had a little misunderstanding of the gen II.

the new Z06 will be in Viper territory but to say one is a killer over the other is an exageration.

BTW- for the current Z06 to run 11.8 it would need something like a 1.8X 60' time, with that kind of 60' the NEW Viper is capable of runnin almost 11.00. While im not sure if its been done,IT IS ENIRELY POSSIBLE! maybe we should check the Viper boards.
