I was just wondering if anyone knows what the LS2 is as far as differing from the LS1-LS6 . It is the new engine going in the 2005 corvette and they say that it gets 22mpg in the city .....

Just using Yahoo!, I was able to find some generic information. It looks like most sites are using words right out of a GM press release.

http://www.corvettemuseum.com/specs/2005/index.shtml

Power:
A new LS2 6.0-liter small-block V-8 is the standard engine in the 2005 Corvette C6. It is based on GM’s new Gen IV small-block family of engines.

The LS2 raises the bar for standard performance in the Corvette, delivering estimated peak output levels of 400 horsepower (@ 6000rpm) and 400 lb.-ft. of torque (@ 4400rpm). It is the largest, most powerful standard small-block engine ever offered in Corvette.

Not only does the LS2 engine deliver impressive horsepower, but in a true measure of real-world efficiency, it also boasts the best combination of horsepower and fuel economy among the world’s best performance cars...(22.6mpg).

more torque means you can drive around in a lower rpm easily on the street which is why im guessing its gonna be gettin decent mileage.

It's my understanding that the LS2 is basically the ZO6 motor.

Not quite. The LS2 is a 6.0 liter Gen IV small block V8 where as the LS6 is still a 5.7 liter Gen III small block V8. Given the changes in displacement and "generations," I'm sure there are internal changes as well.

Thats coming later.. the 3 valve heads supposidly more or less bolt right up on the LSx blocks.

Gut feeling, I'm skeptical about the 3 valve heads.. but I'm not an mech engineer.. But, I'd really be a true believer of then if they remake the C5-R heads with the 3 valve arrangement too..

Performance should be close, but not the same engine at all

It's different but it's not. It's a 6.0 to start out with, so that's quite a big difference right there....

I looked it up on the net , It is basicly a larger , mildly improved LS1 . They based most things off the desighn and just improved them .

Its really not a different generation but thats what GM calls it. Probably more for publicity like the motor is drastically different from the current 346ci LS1/6. GM's just adding about 20 cubes and some other small changes to the LS6 block (dont think they still make the standard LS1 block anymore) to improve upon it. Thats all thats really been discussed in the 5th Gen Forum so far I believe.

Hmm, maybe they'll bring back the Z28s and Trans Ams with it in '06..
