I got codes...
I got codes...
I'm needing a little help. I just bought myself a nice OBD2 scanner because i've got an engine light on. Playing around with my new toy this morning and found the following...
Stored ECU codes:
P0115 - Engine Coolant temp sensor 1 circuit
P0505 - Idle air control system
P0110 - Intake air temp sensor 1 circuit
P1605 - Didn't give a proper description, only - Loss of HVAC serial data
I then ran the diagnostic test for the Engine light and got:
P0442 - Evaporative emission system leak
I was told before that the emission thing wasn't a big deal (needs fixing in due time) but not sure about the other codes.
Can anyone shed some light on what the next step normally is once the codes have been pulled? I'm new to this whole thing...
Thanks

No expert here, but ...
The explanations beside the codes give you an idea of what to do.
This link ( from the stickeis up top, BTW
) https://www.camaroz28.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=753630 will give you a link to Gear Chatter, which has step by step diagnostic data for each code by year model.
Normally, I would think if the code is for a bad sensor that you would look for a wiring issue or replace the sensor as needed.
The evaporative emssions is probably a bad hose somewhere from the fuel tank, or could even be a phantom - it depends if it specifically said small leak for the code or not.
Hope this helps !

Re: I got codes...
Sorry, i'm a bit of a newbie with these things... It's a 1998 Z28 LS1, no Mods.
That gearchatter site is amazing! Thanks! It has given me a full description for my evap code. A bit beyond my skill level but I know that the problem is directly linked to me recently having the fuel pump changed. So I can take it back to the garage.
Unless i'm missing something, why wouldn't gearchatter show my other codes? I have 4 other codes and not one of them is explained on that website?

Strange ! You'll have to do it the old fashioned way - Google.
I found this for P0115 (linky) - the others are probably out there as well. Since a good chunk of OBD II codes are standard across all car lines I would not worry if you pulled up a hit that is not GM related, although the diagnostic info may not be applicable.
Good Luck !

Re: I got codes...
I cleared the codes so i'm going to try the Camaro again and see what I get.
Thanks and I'll let you know. Love that gearchatter BTW!
Re: I got codes...
Hi guys,
Need some advice.
After clarifying that the only code I was getting relevant to the Camaro was the P0442, I took it back to the garage that changed out my fuel pump. Because the code was only thrown after they changed the pump, I concluded they haven't connected something up or missed something out.
The garage owners response was "it's the pump". He is refering to the fact I got them to install the Granatelli pump from Summit and not a factory 'complete unit'. I paid a lot of money in labour charges for them to do the job and he actually expects me to just keep clearing the code every time it comes on, as in, that's it - forever!
Is it possible the pump is faulty and throwing the code, or is it more likely it's just not been put together properly?
Cheers.

Re: I got codes...
Its not the pump. Here's the code info direct from the GM website, specific to the 1998 LS1 in an F-Body:
Could be as simple as a loose gas cap or damaged seal on the cap. Could be a problem with the vent hose from the tank to the carbon canister.... which is something they would have moved/disturbed during the fuel pump replacement. Could also be in the line to the purge solenoid. Could also be a leaky gasket on the fuel pump support assembly where it bolts onto the tank.
EVAP SYSTEM - SMALL LEAK DETECTED
P0442 0.1 V - 4.90V
This DTC will detect a small leak in the EVAP. system between the fuel fill cap and up to but not including the purge solenoid.

Re: I got codes...
The shop probably screwed something up. P0442 sets when the PCM detects a fuel vapor leak. The pump itself cannot cause this. Like Injuneer said... Damage to the fuel pump assembly seal, damage to the EVAP lines (or a disconnected line), or an improperly seated fuel filler neck are very likely causes after a fuel pump replacement.
Re: I got codes...
Hi guys,
It's been a while, but just to update this thread... I changed out the fuel filler cap (new one from dealer) and it managed to keep the code away. Although, the code came back at approximately the same time I started smelling raw fuel.
Every time I fill the tank right up, fuel spills out! It's not overspill from the pumps because I watched the guy fill it up. If it happens again i'm going back to the dealer and going to try and get another cap, because I definitely think that's the issue here.
Another question, can a code clear itself? The check engine light came on again and I assumed it was the same as above or another code i've been getting (can't rememebr exactly, something to do with HVAC?) I left the car sitting for about 4 days, started her up and the engine light was gone? Haven't checked the OBD2 yet but for the first time ever, the car actually ran a little rough a low RPM...
Parked her up overnight, and then this morning everything seemed normal. No light and running great.
Any thoughts?

Re: I got codes...
Yes, a DTC can clear itself, and/or the MIL can turn off by itself. But just because the light is off does not mean the DTC isn't stored. GMs, unlike many other vehicles, will store history DTCs (not currently malfucntioning or recently cleared).
Where does the fuel spill out from? You may have a problem with the filler neck!

Re: I got codes...
I hooked up my OBD2 reader and NO CODES, NO MIL nothing! that's a bit strange, no? I can understand it switching its light off but really expected the codes to be stored.
