don't know about 97 or 98, but my HPP3 for my 99 is linked to the vin# of the car it's installed on.

if it's installed on one car, the same unit cannot be used on another car until it's uninstalled on the first car.

all marketing, hypertech wouldn't want us passing around our programmers to all our buddies, they want to sell more units...

Well, the only way to unlock it will be to hook up to the same car it was used in earlier.

You could *try* calling Hypertech (901) 382-8888 to see if they would unlock it for you so you could sell it, but I don't know what they charge.

Actually, I'll be going out there this afternoon for a video thing .... I'll try to remember to ask someone about this. Two questions:

What happened to the '98? What are you wanting to do with the unlocked programmer?

Two Problems:

1 - if the HPP is already installed on the '98, you've gotta plug back into that car and remove the program directly (unless Hypertech would be so kind as to unlock it for you??.........but doubtful )

2 - the HPP for a '98 won't work for a '97 anyway. I know this, because they are made each year, specific to that year. I was going to buy one used from an '01 and it would not work for my '02. The display will actually read: "This Programmer Not Compatible With This Vehicle" (or something to that effect). So if an '01 won't work for an '02 (even though both are identical LS1's) then I don't see a '98 LS1 programmer working for a '97 LT1.

Oh I know it wont work on my 97, I just want to sell the thing so I can get something back for it.

And the 98 T/A's trans went out like 3 times and on the 3rd time the rear end broke too. I was broke at the time so I had to get rid of it. I still got $13,000 on a trade in for with 60k miles on it and the tranny and rear end broken. I still miss my baby though
