Free Ported MAF?
Free Ported MAF?
Is the Free Ported Mass Air Meter Housings mod worth it?
I have heard that it can be pretty dangerous...if so what parts do I have to be careful with?
For what reasons should I NOT do it?

If you have an automatic, you're taking more risks by porting the MAF. With a M6 tranny, you might have better luck.
You could do what I did .... find someone who bought MAF ends and then buy their OEM ends. Or, snag one from a wreck. I paid $20 for my OEMs from a guy who bought aftermarket ends.
Now I have a ported set and a stock set.

Can be risky , if you take the ends off , DO NOT TOUCH THE SENSORS IN THE MAF HOUSING . They are very sensitive

I'm not saying it isn't I just want to know what to be careful of if I want to do mine.

Could you explain how it is riskier to port the maf on auto than m6.

Porting thte MAF lets in more air without the computer knowing because you just made the hole bigger without telling the 'puter.
Could cause early trans failure.

The computer uses the air flow numbers from the MAF to determine the load and adjusts the trans line pressure to suit.

Could you do a tune to take care of that and increase the line pressures in the trans.
I personally would not other with porting the stock MAF ends. I did this on my 97 LT1 and noticed no appreciable gains in driving, fuel economy, or ET's at the dragstrip.
The "danger" on porting as many have already mentioned is damaging the three wires that run across the diameter of the plastic MAF housing and give the MAF readings. The MAF ends are aluminum and are removed from the actual plastic MAF wire/sensor before porting. All the porting does (besides removing the screen) is to remove an aluminum bar that runs across the diameter of the MAF end as well as smoothing the edges of the MAF end openings. The bar is there to help protect the MAF wire elements, as is the screen. As long as you're careful and don't fat-finger the MAF wires, there is no inherent danger in porting the MAF. But.... I personally don't feel it's worth the 4-5 hours of work for the limited (if any) gains that result.

The bar is there to direct air to the sensors for a more accurate reading
