Convertable vs. Coupe vs. T-Tops

1/4 mile differance? How much quicker is a Coupe the a Convertable? Noticable? I am trying to figure out if getting a Coupe just because its lighter is worth not having a Convertable. Thanks, Ryan

There's not really a noticeable difference in speed. The convert is heavier and might run a tenth slower if all the other variables were equal, but it's not worth worrying about.

That being said, T-tops are by far the best, because I said so. Heh, convertibles are good for what they are, but I don't like the way they look with the top up, they're a little heavier and chassis strength is reduced, and visibility is lowered bigtime. Just not my cup of tea.

But if it's what you want, don't let the fear of it being any slower scare you. I doubt it really makes that much of a difference in the long run.

I agree. They're not really that much heavier. If you want a vert, get a vert. If it were me though, I'd get the t-tops. I love my vert but I'd still rather have t-tops.

I personally prefer T-Tops over everything. my car is my daily driver so, while I may enjoy racing it occasionally, I know the T-tops will provide me with more enjoyment more often.

The coupe is somewhat lighter but I dont think that its so incredibly much lighter than the T's that it really shouldnt amount to much.

Converts are slower cause of the weight. Not just from the top but because of the add on to the stucture to stiffen the car. From what I have heard they are several hundred pounds heavier. My car with full tank and me not in it weighs 3470. I dont think thats too bad.

Chalk up another one for t-tops.

They give you a open feeling with out the cons of a vert.

Personally, I'd rather have a coupe 1le with deletes. But thats just me. I like my T-Top, but I hardly ever remove the tops and when i do, theres no room in the back to put junk. My alarm is not functioning, so I have to reinstall them whenever I stop.

Unless you really want t-tops, get a hardtop. Just about everyone's t-top car leaks when it rains, which gets very annoying after a while.

I bought a 'vert because i wanted a 'vert, there's nothing to compare. Racing it wasn't a primary concern. T-tops are nice, but you still get leaks (my 'vert's dry so far), and you still lose most of the usable luggage space. Admittedly the 'vert's visibility sucks, just drive around with the roof down...I didn't like the headroom in the t-top cars I sat in - the vert has considerably more - even with the roof up

You must talk to the same few people, the majority of people who have t-tops don't leak and if they do it can be easily fixed. Certainly not a reason to no get t-tops.

The convertable will be heavier. It requires additional structural bracing without the rigid roof. I can only imagine how hard launches will affect the body of a convertable over a coupe, even one with T-tops.

Most examples in the magazines show convertables running consistantly slower than coupes for any model of car. Of course the convertable usually has the slower drivetrain (A4, higher rearend ratio).

I prefer the hard-top its rigidity. With a hard-top there is no roof rattles, leaks, or wind buffeting. Just solid rigid permanent construction.

If you're going to be racing much at all, this is one reason not to get a 'vert:

13.999 or quicker and you need a roll bar/cage. Most stock LS1 verts could run 13s...and personally, I just wouldn't want to have to put a roll bar in my stock F-Body to run at a track.
