Post Common problems????

I have a LS1 Formula. I'm new to the LS1 drivetrain, and I've noticed a couple of things:

1) there is a 'clank' sound when switching from drive to reverse. This happened when the car was stationary, and I had my foot on the brake (not 100%, but enough to keep the car from rolling).

2) In drive and coasting slowly (around 5-10mph) I punch it and hear/feel a 'thud' from under the car in the rear (torque arm?).

Any ideas? Are these problems common? I'm worried because I bought this car for my wife (who is now my ex). She got the car in the divorce, then couldn't afford it...so it's mine (was financed in my name). I'm glad I got it finally, but am concerned it wasn't taken proper care of.

Thanks!

Sounds like a tranny mount. Easy fix.

Which problem? I've had a broken tranny mount on an older F-body before and I got movement in the shifter. Isn't happening on this car. I'll inspect it this weekend, though.

It could also be the cheap P.O.S. rear end that we have under these cars - the rear end has been an issue for sure since '98 w/ the LS1, possibly prior.

(7.5" rear end + big HP = Bango ! )

In any case, I get the same clunks - sometimes when backing up, and sometimes under sudden heavy braking.

The dealer was never able to I.D. the problem - I quit worrying about it.

And, yes - I get the clank noise when putting it into gear as well.

Good Luck !

Sounds like slop in the drivetrain. I get the same thing. If you mount was shot, if would sound like a hammer hitting the bottom of your car, at least if did on my old Camaro. I would worry to much.

When you put it in reverse, is the sound a high pitched hollow "tinking" sound? I was told that it is the aluminum driveshaft vibrating, and nothing to worry about.

I had the same problem but in my 96 LT1 Camaro and the problem was de rear transmissión support (soporte trasero de la transmisión), If you look carefully, you´ll see that where end the transmission and starts the Bar, when push too much power, the transmission virtually tumble and hits the bottom of the car, right down the middle console, it´s all the problem.

Mine "clunks" when I shift it out of park into reverse - when the tranny is still cold. As it warms up, it goes away, becomes smoother. And, the rear end makes some noise too. I seem to remember that my '96 Z28 did that too?

Well, the clunk on acceleration seems to coincide with a 'lean' to the right as the nose comes up. I'm thinking it may be a problem with the r/r shock.

Gonna check on it this weekend, hopefully.

Thanks for all the replies!

The Synchronizers on these cars go out like crazy i have been through two transmissions in a 6 month period. My car is a 98. The 1st engine and tranny lasted 39k miles before the engine was diagnosed with piston slap and was replaced with a PISTON SLAPPING 19k mile motor.
