M1 5w-30 is a good oil, as are many dino oils. But if I'm going to pay the $$$ for synth, I'm going to go with what my research on the boards indicates is the best for LS1s. And as of now, that's the GC IMO. Why did GM use M1 5w-30 as factory fill? Was it because they throughly tested many oils in their V8s, analyzed the UOAs, engine wear comparison tear downs, etc? Or...

I should clarify that I'm not saying that you can't get long engine life with Mobil 1 5w30, just that you can get a longer engine life with other choices.
As far as the 5w-40 M1 (or other 40 wieghts) in LS1s, some interesting quotes off ls1tech:

I'm not a big fan of Mobil 1 oils though, but I know there are a lot of people on here who will run nothing but Mobil 1, so I had to give them some sort of better choice than their super thin 5w30 (which is almost a 5w20)

There are better oils out there than Mobil 1 though. I prefer German Castrol 0w30, but other good choices are Castrol 5w40, Amsoil 5w40 or Royal Purple racing 41.

You are quoting one mans opinion. He is not God only a man. He's making statements that he can NOT back up with facts. Oil analysis does not take a motor apart and measure wear. GM does indeed test whether an oil will protect their engines. Any engine platform spends 1000s of hours on the dyno an millions of miles in real world testing. If Mobil 1 5w-30 was as bad as Pat makes it out to be then every test mule and dyno engine would have shown it on tear down. And so would mine after a 1000 passes down the 1/4 mile.

Nope, not God, just someone who knows a lot about oils. As far as oil analysis not being factual or a good indicator of engine wear... thousands of companies worldwide who use oil analysis as a key component of their predictive maintenance programs would disagree with you. And patman has never said M1 5w-30 was a bad oil, just that there are better choices out there. But as I said to the OP, he should do his own research and make his own decisions. That's a reasonable position to take, right?

Anyone who posts on LS1tech.com is God.... didn't you know that?

That place is all about making money that spreads non-factual information like herpes.

Oh I forgot to update! I went with Mobil 1 and got a Mobil 1 oil filter to go with it and I also changed my fuel filter for the heck of it too. Car runs noticeably better...I am satisfied. Is it OK to wait like 5k miles before the next change?

I was commenting basically to the 3rd quote where unequivically states that Mobil 1 5w-30 is to thin for a hard driven LS1. He doesn't and can't know that unless he's done tear downs of hard driven LS1s that show more wear that tear downs of hard driven LS1s with other oils that show less wear.
And don't get me wrong here I like Pat, he's a personal friend and we've had dinner together many times. He just shouldn't make statements like that without modifiers like ''in my opinion''.
