Bang - Help!

I just installed an SLP Dual/dual exhaust and y-pipe on my 2002 Camaro SS. Sounds great, runs great...but there is one problem. When I start hard, just as the tires break loose a bit, i hear a loud banging from under the car. I know its not wheel hop because if the tires spin smoothly (in low traction areas such as wet or sand) it does not happen; only with hard starts. I think it may be from the exhaust pipe hitting the underside of the car when the engine torques, but im not possitive. Have you ever heard of this kind of problem? Any ideas?
Thanks,
Justin

Re: Bang - Help!

Sounds to me like the y-pipe banging the underside of the car. I believe other people have had this problem as well.

Re: Bang - Help!

I have the same issue........i have been told that poly motor mounts will help this along with SFC's to stiffen up the chassis.

Re: Bang - Help!

Definitely the y-pipe. Some people put a piece of rubber fuel line between the y-pipe and the floor boards to fix the problem.

Happened all the time on my 97 T/A when I put LT's on it. It sounds like someone is knocking really fast on the underside of your car. Like everyone else said, its just the y-pipe.

Re: Bang - Help!

Is this bad? It doesnt sound good...Ok, so I shoudl get some polly moter mounts (from were?), and SFC's...is there anything else i can do to correct this...and why does the y-pipe do this? What if i welded the the joint between the y-pipe and intermedate pipe, will that help at all? also Where is this hitting, how would a rubber fuel line help? Sorry for the abundance of questions, its just so aggravating...ANY opinions will help...
Thanks again...

Re: Bang - Help!

It acts as a buffer. I wouldn't go to the extent of swapping out motor mounts because you'll increase the amount of vibration and noise inside the car.

1. Put some exhaust wrap around the Y-pipe.
2. Get a little piece of radiator hose.
3. Get a large ss aircraft hose clamp,Large enough for the pipe.
4. Put the hose clamp thru the rubber hose around the exhaust wrap and tighten the hose clamp with the rubber hose against the floor board.

Re: Bang - Help!

Should i do this to the drivers side, or passanger side, or both? Wont the heat from the exhaust melt the radiator tube?

Re: Bang - Help!

The person that talked about putting some rubber between thepipe and frame are on the right track, on my 396 when I had new exuast put on it, they didn't do a very good job and I had to cut the hangers of an replace them, and there was a spot where it vibrated agianst, the frame I cut a piece of rubber about 3/8 thick an crammed it between the frame and pipe and don't have the noise any more, BUT, it is in the back of the car so there's is very little heat, climb under your car and see if you can locate where it's hitting, if it gets to hot there get a peice of welding blanket or some sort of heat shield and put it between the pipe and rubber, hope this helps, good luck.

Re: Bang - Help!

You might wanna check to make sure it's actually hitting the underside of the car. Mine used to vibrate a little because it was contacting the driveshaft tunnel brace (that black, stamped piece of crap that has four bolts) right where the y-pipe connected to the catback. A few washers solved that problem.

Re: Bang - Help!

The reason for wrapping the pipe with muffler wrap first is to prevent the hose from melting. You need to look under your car to see where there may be contact. There's likely a smudge or dent or some sign of contact. It seems unlikely that it'll be both sides since what's happening is that the motor is turning from the torque.
