98 LS1 vs 99-02 LS1

What is so bad about the 98 LS1's? And to convert to a 99-02 LS1 would I just need the newer wiring harness and PCM and thats it? I am thinkin about buying a 98 LS1 with T56 setup and putting it in my 96. Any help would be appreciated as well as why I should stay away from the 98. It has 103k. Thanks Mike

IIRC, the issue with the 1997 ~ 1998 LS1s was too many died too soon due to oil pump failures.

Someone else can chime in if this is incorrect.

If you're making 480 horsepower now, why go with an LS1?

hmmmmmmmmm so a 98 LS1 with 103k wouldnt be a good idea huh? unless I change out the oil pump you think and install new bearings, then I should be fine, but everyone says the 98 PCM is wacked.

If the oil pump lasted 103k it's probably not going to fail.
98 PCMs are not whack, they are harder to tune and yes a 99 wiring harness and PCM willl work on a 98.
The major reason for not getting a high mileage 97-98 LS1 is that the cylinder liners are thinner so they can NOT be bored if a rebuild is necessary. There's only enough liner for a .005" max hone clean up. If .005 doesn't clean it up then it's sleeves ($$$) or a new block. 99 and up have .010 so a careful machinist could do a minor bore and hone for a rebuild.

oh okay. So is there a specific reason they are harder to tune? So im guessing the wiring harness is the same and all id need is the 99 PCM. Thanks

harness is diff too. you will need the 99-up harness and pcm or you can re-pin the 98 harness but that takes time and patience.
