wire tapping for gauge lighting
wire tapping for gauge lighting
I'm trying to find a dash light wire to hook to my fuel pressure gauge. I was wanting to just tap directly into one of the wires on the dimmer switch but so far I haven't gotten the instrument cluster bezel off the dash. I can see 5 wires on the dimmer control; two whites a blue or green and a brown or two.
Any directions or suggestions on finding the good wire that dims with the rest of the cluster would really help me. Even telling what bolts, clips or fastener to remove to get to the switch would be appreciated. Thanks

i think it the gray wire u can see it throw the fues box. If you wan to get in there u have to remove the a-plier both side, then the top of the dash then the bottom panal by ur knees then u can get the screew that hold the brezel on
Re: wire tapping for gauge lighting
Thanks. I'll leave the dash bezel on then. I can see the gray wire. Not much of it is accessible but if I'm careful I think I can tap into it without damage. Thanks again!
Re: wire tapping for gauge lighting
i believe the brown wire is the parking light wire.. itll turn on with the dash lights but will not give the dimming effect. i use that wire for alarm installs on chevys all the time.
so basically we can count the brown out since it doesnt dim.

Re: wire tapping for gauge lighting
I bought one of those testers that has a sharp point to pierce the wire insulation. The wire that follows the rheostat dimmer is green. I'm good to go now. Thanks.
Re: wire tapping for gauge lighting
All wired up now. I installed the stewart warner analog display rather than digital. The gauges match the factory white on black with red pointer. I used the green cast filter over the bulbs and it looks really nice imho.
Hope nobody minds but I'm going to post some pics of the gauges:
The flash killed the color but the white silkscreen is a pastel green. To me it's gorgeous:

Thanks but what should i do about the color mis-match. It doesn't look that bad in the car. I guess the flash brought out the difference in texture and color.
Re: wire tapping for gauge lighting
I will take your advice. It really doesn't look bad in the car and looking at it through the door opening. It's a project car so if something comes up where I can make it look a little better then I'll do something about it. Thanks for your input. If you're a father, have a happy father's day. If not, then have a good day anyway.
Re: wire tapping for gauge lighting
What color is your interior? If its "graphite", The Eastwood Company has a "Graphite" vinyl paint that is an excellent match. I've use it for the A-pillar ni my 94 Formula (click on "Step into my office...." in signature), and dash blanking plates for the Formula and a 97 SS and it was a match on both cars.
Re: wire tapping for gauge lighting
Yes it is graphite and I will take a look on their website. I need to polish my windows too so I've got a good reason to place an order now. Thank you!
