Angry Window Track/Tray Problems

Well, I'm not sure if someone tried to break into my car or I just slammed the door too hard one day, but my window wont seat correctly when closed. My car has power windows.

I have removed the panel and plastic to get a better look and it seems that where the fastener from the vertical slide track connects to the metal window "tray" if you will, is broken out at the bottom. So in other words if I took my doornob and tore it out the side of my door, thats why the bottom of the tray looks like. I found 2-3 peices of it lying around inside the door. Now the window can move freely front to rear about an inch and can wabble left to right which is why it does not seat correctly. If its raining or I am washing my car I have to move the window into place then shut the door, while holding the window still. It's becoming quite the pain in the ***

Any idea how to fix this?

Not positive whats broken, but all the window parts are available from the dealer, as individual parts or assemblies. Check your regulator arms after you fix this, they bend fairly easily.

Re: Window Track/Tray Problems

sounds like the plastic guide wheel is gone? I recently found that my rear guide wheel was loosely attached to the window glass frame. It has about a 1 inch aluminum extension from the wheel to the mount position and the mounting to the window frame is a press fit. The press fit had loosened. I took some pliers and flattened the metal around the back of the glass frame mount point and then used a Drexel to grind off the flair so I could remove the wheel assembly. I then removed the top stop from the channel and removed the wheel assembly. I cut off the press fit part and tapped the aluminum extension for a bolt. The reason I mention this is because you will need to remove the entire glass if you want to press fit a new part, but could leave it in place if you convert to a bolt like I did. Good Luck.

Here is a picture of the inside of the door:

Explain exactly what is broken.

Many times, you can find the window tracks for sale on Ebay for around $35.00. Otherwise, i'm sure someone is parting out a car in the parts for sale section that has good window tracks.

The hardest part is removing the rivets that hold the glass to the track. You have to cut off the stems first, then drill them out. I chose to use SS/nylon ringed locknuts and bolts to reassemble instead of the stupid rivets.

The problem is at the #3 spot. Where the verticle track is connected to the larger part of the tray. The bottom of that larger part is broken out. The stud that slides in the track is still in the track, but broken out of where it should be connected into the horizontal tray.

I hope that explains it better.

Yeah, it's clear now. You'll need to get a new window track somewhere. Try the for sale section of this forum as well as Ebay. That is a common point of failure in our car doors.

Good, I figured without a pic I wouldnt be able to explain it, but my "Paint" picture just didnt turn out right.

I was figuring either I slammed it too hard or someone tried to break into my car.

So how hard is a new track? I just need the horizontal peice right? Any install pages or intructions? Thanks.

That is exactly what happened with my '97, lost the guide wheel. Do you happen to have a pitcure of this bolt repair you did? Or do you remember what size the wheel was? I bought my car like that and when I took her apart, no sign of the wheel anywhere in the door.
Thanks

DAT, my wheel was ok and still in the track. The end riveted to the window frame was loose and rattled really bad when the window was part way down. I just converted it from a press fit to a bolt in by tapping a 1/4 - 20 hole where it attaches to the glass frame.

So I might get away with not having to get all new stuff if I can drill a new hole and get the stud to go in there...hmm..
