Re: whats the best way to push start a 6spd?

OK, funny story time.

When I was younger, my dad owned this Fiat Spyder, which was a PITA and in the shop more than we drove it. It wouldn't start one day, so he got my sister to drive her Olds Cutlass Supreme and push him down the road so he could pop the clutch and get it going. (Pushing by hand hadn't gotten it started, so he thought he needed to go faster, hence the reason for getting my sister to push him)

So off they go down the road, after a short distance, he realized that the Fiat just wasn't going to start, so he started waving his hand at my sister to tell her to stop. She, however, thought he meant to go faster, so she did.

Every time he waved, she thought he wanted to go faster, so she would speed up. The faster he waved, the faster she went.

Can you just imagine seeing a '78 Olds Cutlass Supreme pushing this little Fiat Spyder down the road at 50 MPH? ROFL !!!

My dad finally sold that car to the mechanic that kept fixing it.

its all about engine speed.

think about this... on a tractor, you can start in most of the gears from a stop. if you had it in the ultra low first when the clutch gets poped out, you're trying to spin the engine really fast. meanwhile if you stick it in too high of a gear, when you pop it, the engine is still spinning too slow to start.

most of the time with street cars, you popstart it in first. if it has really low gears you may be able to start it in 2nd.....

BS. You don't need that much speed to crank the engine. There is a tremendous amount of gear reduction in first gear. Using a higher gear, there is less chance you will loose traction on a low traction surface, as well (someone already mentioned dragging the tires). The engine will spin more easily and smoothly in a higher gear. 3rd gear or higher will easily start the engine, not to mention being much kinder to your drivetrain.
