Turn the key to the "ON" position, put the shifter into 2nd gear and pop the clutch. It's really not hard to do at all. I had to do it alot on my old Escort and half the time I'd do it in 1st. I've even done it a few times in reverse.

turn the key to on.

if you're lucky enough to have someone else push, put it in 1st, leave the clutch in and when you get rolling, pop the clutch.

if you have to push, have the ignition on, and when its rolling, hop in, put it in 1st and pop the clutch.

if you're pushing it backwards, yuo can do the same thing in reverse.. athough if you're pushing, getting thru the reverse lockout could be hard.

ya ive never popped it in second before but i have done reverse and 1st, but w the whole "popping the clutch" do i have my foot on the clutch and then release and right when i release push on the gas? do i keep on pushing on the gas? do i push back on the clutch? ive been just letting go of the clutch and then putting the gas all the way down and it kind of stumbles and sounds like it wants to die, but i keep my foot on the gas and then it gets going? is that not the way to do it?

Just let the clutch out, and then put it back in realy quick. You don't need to give it any gas. If you're going slow enough 1st is fine, but I'd use 2nd if you're rolling pretty quick.

Do you press on the gas when starting the car normally with the key?

I've heard if you hold down the gas pedal while you try to start the car it shuts off the injectors. Its suppose to help if your car is flooded.

Using 3rd gear or higher is much easier on the drivetrain.

Re: whats the best way to push start a 6spd?

Step 1: Park car on some sort of incline either roll back or forward doesn't matter...

Step 2: Put key in normal driving position.. On or all the way forward..

Step 3: Hold brake and put clutch in and put car either in reverse or 1st, depending if incline is in front or in back of you.. Let off Clutch and Brake

Step 4: Put clutch all the way in, let car start rolling, totally let go of the clutch, as soon as you hear the car turn over, put the clutch in all the way and hold brake.. Car should be running.. if not repeat steps 2 - 4..

If no incline is around I got real good at opening my door and pushing my car back while in neutral and putting the clutch in while rolling and putting the trans in reverse and popping it that way.. My friend had starter trouble for awhile and he couldn't do this so it may take practice..

these engines have so much power that i would figure to go with second or above. mine just locks up the tires in first. thats why i would go with second/have gone with second

Re: whats the best way to push start a 6spd?

I agree with Shoebox. My Grandfather taught me to push start the tractor on the farm by telling me to put it in high gear and let the clutch out once it was rolling. I took off down through the pasture just fine, but I still have to laugh when I remember looking back and seeing him and my sister bouncing all over in the two wheel cart I was towing behind. I forgot that part about putting the clutch back in once the engine started.
