vehicle speed sensor
vehicle speed sensor
i have a 1994 camaro with a 1995 engine t-56 transmission and computer. the speedometer on my gauge cluster doesnt work. what is happening is that when i had my clutch installed the installer screwed up all the wiring. the speedometer pigtail (purple and yellow wires)on the transmission is hooked up to the skip shift solenoid and the skip shift pigtail (gray & brown) is hooked up to the speedometer! now this seems like a simple fix just switch the pigtails on the transmission and your good to go. not, when you switch them the speedometer works but the skip shift stays enabled (only 1,4,reverse)throughout the rpm range. when the speedometer pigtail is hooked up to the s/s solenoid the s/s is permanently disabled(access to all gears) but when the correct wiring harness(skip shift pigtail) is hooked up, it stays enabled so i can only shift 1,4,& reverse! the voltage running through the s/s pigtail is @ 10.xx volts, the speedometer pigtail (when at idle) is at 4.xx volts. what in the world is going on and what can i do to fix this! thanks mike
Sounds like they may have made a 3-way error, transposing the pigtails for the VSS, the skip shift solenoid and the reverse lockout solenoid (always energized except when the car is at rest).
Are you sure you are switching the skip shift and the VSS wires?

sorry my mistake, i was switching the wires between the rev. lockout and the vss.(they have the same pigtails on them) the vss pigtail has 4.xx volts at idle.(i know this because when i hook it up to the vss the spedo works) the wires on the skip shift are at 10.xx and the wires on the rev lockout(that are currently hooked up to the vss) are at 10.xx at idle. so i guess my question is what is the correct voltage that is supposed to be hooked up to the vss, skip shift, reverse lockout, and actually my backup lights dont work either so what is the voltage running through that pigtail also. (let me put it like this the only wires hooked up to the tranny for driving purposes right now are the ones on the skip shift, rev. lockout and thats it. the reverse lights dont work and the speedometer doesnt work. )
The skip shift solenoid and the reverse lockout solenoids are both powered off the same fuse as the MAF sensor, EGR solenoid and EVAP solenoid. The brown wire should have full battery voltage, or at least 12V. The light green (reverse L/O) and gray (skip sh) supply a ground from the PCM to activate the solenoids.
The VSS connector receives 5V from the PCM (yellow is "sighal", purple is ground), and the voltage will vary from 0-5V as the reluctor teeth pass the pickup.
I don't know the details of the reverse light pigtail, but logically the bulbs are running on a 12V circuit.

thanks for all of the help. it helped out a lot. i tried reversing the wires between the s/s and the rev. l/o but it was still doing the same thing. so what i did was just not hook anything up to either of them and it worked. so now the only wires that are on my transmission are the vss wires and nothing else and everything works fine. for now. thanks once again.
mike.
