Trying to fix GAS needle through trip odometer hole..using twisty tie from bread loaf
So last week I changed my battery. I drove around for a day or 2 and noticed that my gas guage needle was stuck, it was pinched in place by my aluminum bezel I installed. I don't know how it would even go waaay past the "F" to make it to the bezel to begin with. My guess is that I was changing the battery and you know how while you are screwing in the connector it makes contact and lets go then makes contact again. Well I think it "jolted" the needle all the way to the right side.
This might sound funny, but in the quest NOT to remove my dash I stuck a twisty tie from a loaf of bread...
through the trip odometer opening, and I can get a hold of the needle. But when I move it...even all the way down to the "E", it goes right back up all the way to the bezel again when I turn the key. I have turned the key and held the needle in place for a couple of minutes and when I let go...right back all the way to the right side.
Right now I left the twisty thing there holding it at the half way mark. I filled up my tank till the pumped stopped and have not driven it since. So how can I fix it without taking apart the dash? Should I leave the twisty tie there while I disconnect/reconnect the battery? I have a 94Z btw.
arrrrrgh......any help would be appreciated.

God i'm glad i have my Trans Am dash you can pop the cluster out in a few mins. I pretty much shattered my 93-96 dash pad after trying to go back in and get my cluster back out of my car. I wonder if you have a ground problem somewhere? That can make the gauge peg. I would try starting the car and see where it goes. What can it hurt.

Yeah I did that also, and nothing. It's been raining and kinda cold. I really don't feel like going out to tackle this today. I know it will turn into a 3 hour affair once I start.....I don't think it's a ground, just the needle is off. But I think I need to disconnect the battery. I will try it tomorrow.

Washing, waxing and vaccuming..
Touching up the nicks with paint...
fixing the turn signal bulb..
Polishing the Z06's
Touching up calipers
checking fluids and such..
apply more tape to the rear letters cuz they are peeling off..
and who knows whatever else.....
this is why ANYthing I do on this car takes me 3 hrs.....if I'm lucky
