strange electrical problem

heres the deal, i have a 94z28 that refuses to start. all is normal until you turn the key to the on position. the "security" dummy light flashes and the car will not crank, as if there is no power to the starter. the lights dim like normal but theres just silence. im assuming this has something to do with the alarm system. (i havnt noticed any previous problems with the starter). i have tried arming the alarm, dissarming it with the keyless entry, setting the alarm off, even disconected the battery to clear all codes, and still no luck. i then checked all the fuses and relays, there all good, the battery has 12.5 volts. i then thought maybe it has something to do with the PASS-KEY or whatever that call they little chip in the key. so i dug out another key and still no luck. sometimes the "security" light is on even when the car is off and the key is not in the ignition, this seems to be totally random but regardless, the car will not crank. anyone have a similar experience or have any ideas?? im completey stumped on this one

Not really sure, but maybe there is a break in the wire from the ignition cylinder to where ever the wire for the PASSKey goes. I've never had that problem but I was told by some coworkers that it was a common problem for the wire to break at or near the ignition cylinder.

Re: strange electrical problem

I've had this problem with my '94z. ended up being a custom alarm someone put in it. Had to hold a button under the drivers side dash and start it up at the same time, but only time I"ve had the problem is when I disconnect the battery. since I found that other alarm system haven't had any probs with it..

Do a search for "security light" in this forum. There are all kinds of threads about the system. I don't know about the light staying on with the key out, though. If you have an aftermarket alarm, then there may be some other issues.

You might also check if theres a little card typically located about knee level under the steering column. Also, check if you have whats called a vallet switch. Its a little button that most after market alarm systems come with. Its typically put on the under side of the steering wheel. If that doesnt work, for shats and giggles, hook up some jumper cables. Ive heard that if there isnt a full 12 volts it wont fire...just an idea even what ever your reading is wrong with the 12.5 volts.
