Should I just get a new door?
Should I just get a new door?
I need your guys opinion on this,
My drivers side door has several failures to it
- THe window will not go up evenly. If I dont hold it while It is going up it
will fall towards me. It seems like a metal piece inside the door that holds
the door is broken. Someone tried to break into my car and my guess this
is how it happened
- THe door lock will not work with keyless entry or with the key. THe only way
to lock and unlock door is to move the **** left or right. I checked inside
and its a black plastic piece that is broken in a box that pushes the metal
rod that moves the lock opened or closed
- When I open the door it makes a popping sound. Looking at the drivers
door from the outside the bottom left corner of the door gets stuck with the
plastic molding and bends it back and once its pulled far enough when opening the door is slides back because it is cracked. This happened 2 yrs ago when My car was in neutral on my driveway and my friend and I were
not able to push the car forward (it had died) so it rolled back and the door
bent towards the engine compartment and was perpendicular at a 90* angle
so i believe i bent the hinges...
sorry for the long thread but what do you guys suggest ?
replace or repair? Cost Vs. repair and replacement ?
THANKS A LOT!!!!

Re: Should I just get a new door?
Damn!
So its not necessarily just removing the old door and putting the new one in and bolting it in where the old doors went then right? A misalignment can cause greater problems like water leaks..
Ok I dont want to do this myself anymore. I rather have someone else get really frustrated and mad and loose their appetite for the whole day. Is it cheaper to go with a new door or have the body shop repair every defect on the door?

Re: Should I just get a new door?
I recently replaced my drivers door myself.
Alligning it properly requires removing the front fender. That is the only way to get to the bolts. Once you have the door latching open and closed properly, you can install and adjust the window glass.
Also, even if you get a new one, it is likely that bending the door backwards damaged the cars understructure that the hinges bolt to. It may be necessary to have a body shop straiten it.
And to top it all off, even if you get the right color door, it is likely to not match. Depending on the color of your car, GM had several different mix batches of each color. You will likely need to get the new door painted anyways.
Doors can be found shipped for under $150.00. The expensive part is getting it painted. I paid $400 to get mine done, then I installed it myself. I was very picky about how mine turned out though, you may be able to do it for less money.
