scanner comm prob

i have a 95 z28 6spd. had the engine and ecm redone last summer .got the car running and the fuel pump went out.put a new pump in fired it up and let it runabout 10 min then it started sputtering and backfiring throught the intake and set a service engine lite. my 95 has the obd1 system with the obd2 plug. i bought a scanner to do both 1 and 2. plug it in and it powers up but says unable to connect check dlc connection. all fuses are good nothing seems out of the ordinary any ideas what may be goig on

Re: scanner comm prob

What brand is the scanner? Are you manually switching it to OBD-1 mode (serial data is on pin 9 on a 95 OBD-1, pin 2 on a true OBD-2). Do you have 12V at pin "16" (lower row, right hand corner)?

Re: scanner comm prob

How does the scanner know if it's reading an OBD-1 PCM or an OBD-2 PCM? It has to know which pin in a 16-pin connector feeds the data stream. Do you have to enter a VIN, engine code, etc.?

The Innova 3120 is known to not work on our cars.

Re: scanner comm prob

I posted a link to a thread that indicates that. If he had done a search on "Innova 3120" he would have found that post, showing where it did connect, it would produce a faulty list of 8 codes, because as GaryDoug discovered, it has a faulty database for the codes.

Re: scanner comm prob

Your research has failed you. Return the Innova 3120, and for about half the money buy this one, which will work:
Amazon.com: Actron CP9185 Elite AutoScanner Diagnostic Code Scanner: Automotive Amazon.com: Actron CP9185 Elite AutoScanner Diagnostic Code Scanner: Automotive

You will need the CP9127 OBD1 cable adapter also:
GM OBD I ALDL Cable Kit Cp9127 - Actron (CP9127)

Amazon has the best price on the scanner but not on the adapter cable.
