power steering pump is shot

or

belt is shot

or

air in the pump system

i'd check the belt and bleed the system first...

realize that turning the wheel with the car not moving is about the MOST stress you can put on the steering system. since the wheels are not rolling, you basically have to skid the rubber to make the tire turn on the pavement...this is even worse with wider tires.

Re: rubbing, screetchin noise

I'm going to go with the power steering pump being shot.
