Replacing Rear Hatch Glass

Well, I'm tired of not having a rear hatch with a defroster, so I'm lookin into purchasing a used rear glass that has the def. grid on it. How hard would it be for me to replace just the glass? Or would I have to take it to a shop and have them do it? Anything special needed?

Re: Replacing Rear Hatch Glass

Depending on if its a 3rd or 4th gen.....3rd gen is kinda tricky....you generally need metal molding on the sides of the glass....never wanna try to put bent ones on it could crack the glass...and you need urethane to attach back deck lid to the glass...along with the 6 or so bolts that go threw the glass...little involved I would pay someone to do it if you had no clue. Then there is the issue of wiring...but Im sure you know that.

4th gen....need a new molding and a couple tubes of urethane....problem would be removal of old glaas without breaking it...easy for a glass person.

Good luck

Re: Replacing Rear Hatch Glass

This is for my 93, I guess I should have mentioned that, lol. Yea, I'd buy another hatch and just bolt it on, but I'm getting this glass for under $10.00. So I'm not sure I can pass that up! I'm pretty sure having a shop put it in for me would still be a little less than having to buy a hatch, freight it to my place, align it, and possibly have to have the paint redone. I thought that I would need to put some urethane in there, so I'm just going to leave that to the pros. Thanks for the responses! I guess I was clinging to dream that anything on this car could be easy to replace for once, lol.
