Removing Cat
Removing Cat
I know many of you have removed and/or gutted your cats. Just curious who you get to weld up the straight pipe in its place since it is illegal to remove them on a street car and someone like Midas says ummm no way!
There is a company who makes a straight pipe that appears (somewhat) to be a cat. I don't have a link, but it seems like it was an FI place that also carried the pipe. You could also do an off-road y-pipe (ORY) to bolt right up.
There are also smaller muffler shops (try finding a mom and pop place) that will do the work if you wish. You will probably want to make it a bolt-in, just in case you want to go back to cats at a later date.
Personally, I don't care why you do it, although little is to be gained by it except for special circumstances.

Yes. Did it. 97ss with 14psi FI app. Blower pushed rt side cat (core) into the exhaust pipe. I had a Random Y w/ twin 2 1/2" cats. Nice flowing set-up. I removed the Y. Welded 3/4 by 1/8 strip stock on pipe to hold geometry. Then cut out cats. Replaced w// 2 1/2" exhaust pipe sections from Summitracing. Easy w/ MIG welder. I had to install a CCI insert due to noise. Lots of noise. The cats do a good job @ noise reduction. Pipes were less cost than new cats. B.
Dont go to a major auto repair shop. Go to a mom and pop or some hole in the wall place to get it done. Opening up the yellow pages is a good place to start. Just call around till you find someone. That's what I did. Just be prepared for you car to smell after you remove them.
BTW midas never said anything about my missing cats. I guess it just matters who is running the show.
