Putting into 1st gear with the 2.73
Putting into 1st gear with the 2.73
I was on car domain and was reading this
"Today I took out the plastic piece in the shifting console to allow me to manually put it in 1st gear. This is normally disabled on cars with 2.73 gears to comply with federal emissions standards. Now I've got some more power to play with down low."
How do you do this, and why is it reg. disabled?

Re: Putting into 1st gear with the 2.73
If you do a search, you'll find this in a couple of places.....it has to do with noise pollution or something. Take your shifter, with your foot on the brake and SLAM it down into LOW (or where low should be) and that's it! A 1st gear you can hold! I have done this on at least 5 F-bodies....but do it at your own risk! Don't cry to me if you had too many Wheaties this morning and tear your shifter off! LOL JK! But just give it a good tug & you'll hear it...Good Luck!

Re: Putting into 1st gear with the 2.73
Much easier and safer if you just remove the shifter plate off the console, then trim the plastic piece enough so that it will go into first. If you break it by "slamming", there will be nothing but metal to stop the shifter from then on and you don't want that....
Re: Putting into 1st gear with the 2.73
What exactly do you trim? The plastic piece that moves when you shift from park to drive??? Or the actual piece that says P, R, D, 2 on it? How long should this mod. take? It is safe for the car?
Re: Putting into 1st gear with the 2.73
Why would you manually downshift in an automatic? I was told to never do that, despite the fact that you can, let alone downshifting into 1st, unless 2.73's is a non stock ratio and you can do that?

ahhhh, ic. Perhaps I was told not to in my early days of driving so that I didn't hurt the tranny by engine braking or something.
P.S. Now that I think about it, before when my car was bone stock, my dad was driving it and downshifted into second and it sounded damn good. Kimd of a low, long and resonating growl that winds down. Probably sounds twice as good now.

Re: Putting into 1st gear with the 2.73
when in first ake your foot and press it against the gas pedal as hard as you can.all the way to the ground and don't let up.push it all the way to redline.it's different depending on if you changed the stock manifold or other parts.but the ecu knows where it is,don't ask me how,it just does.do not let up on the gas at redline.keep flooring it and it will shift into 2nd gear.found this out the fun way.i can get my berlinetta to 60 in about 5 secs with only manifold, carb, and compleat exhaust system upgrade.don't know where you'll shift but mine tends to shift at around 45-50.and it gets there fast and is very loud doing it.have fun,but be careful.trannies aren't cheap.try this at your own risk.

I have accidently doen this in my dads v-6. I had it in 1st and wasnt paying attention, instead of hitting the limiter it just upshifted and stayed in second until I slowed down again. Of course now I dont have to worry about selecting first, rev match and into gear
Re: Putting into 1st gear with the 2.73
A reason for putting it in first is to hold the gear going around a corner or something where the computer would normally put it in second. That way you have instant throttle response for stepping on it
I also held my first gear coming off the line in the street race (when i owned my 94 A4/LT1) because I'd have to baby it so bad (bad street/street tires) it would go into second if I didn't.
