PS Pump POS!

I once already had the PS pump replaced at about 50,000 miles because it was leaking or something. now at 95,000 miles I noticed in the cold weather it makes a lot of whining noise at start up and the fluid foams up a lot and leaks past the cap, the foaming pressure was so much that it even put a small crack in the cap. Once it warms up it doesnt make noise and works fine. It does not have any problems in weather above 50 fairenheit.

Does the forming mean air is being sucked into system?

I'm thinking about just leaving the fluid low and running the damn thing until it stops working, I just changed the fluid in it, I change the fluid atleast once a year and the fluid I added has stop leak in it.

Why are the PS pumps on these cars such crap and does anyone else have all these problems with them?

Re: PS Pump POS!

I have 173k on my LT1 on the stock pump, no problems. Also have 98k on my LS1 with no problems. When u replaced it, did you replace any hoses? Was the pump remanufactured? I work at a full service shop. And its common for those pumps to go fairly quickly, sometimes they don't work right out of the box, or they come back the next day. I try to use quality new parts, its not worth doing it twice for a cheap pump.
Sounds like air is getting into the system somehow.

Re: PS Pump POS!

i had an oil change shop look at it today, they say the pump and hoses are leaking, and possibly the cylinder. Ofcourse it was completely covered in oil from the damn thing foaming and over flowing so I dont know how they were able to determine anything. I need to degrease the whole system and have it inspected again.

Is there any differance between the LS1 & V6 cars Steering systems?? My V6 has the Y87 with the faster steering ratio. I had a 99 v6 too and that pump leaked and was replaced under factory warrenty, and I've already replaced this one once at 50,000 and the whole system is crapping out. these things must be real pieces of crap in the v6's. i dont know why GM even bothered making the v6's, the v8's seem to be better in every way.

How is this an engine problem or question?

I'm going to move this to a more fitting tech area.

GM makes a "cold weather" PS fluid. I picked it up at a local Pontiac dealer 15 years ago. They also sold Cadillac, and used this stuff in the Caddy's all the time to keep the noise down. I put some in back then, and haven't touched the fluid for 15 years.

thanks for the tip, I'll look into it,

It's so unbeliveable that I've had 2 v6 camaros that are 5 years newer than your 94 and I've seen 3 PS pumps leak while changing the fluid every year and yours has lasted 15 years with the same fluid.

It must be that you park in a heated garage while I park outside in the cold.

Re: PS Pump POS!

foaming fluid sounds like contamination, what kind/type of fluid are you using exactly?
