power window problem

Hi, Ok When I first get in the car the power windows work fine but a little slow after about 30 seconds they stop working. If I let it sit for a while then try again they will work fine again and on and on and on it goes. Has any one had this same problem or any one know what it is I have not worked on it yet just thought I would ask before I wasted time and money on the wrong thing. I was thinking the motor or the switches. Thanks alot for any help.

Yes, it's a VERY known problem on our cars... Basically what's happening is inside your window motor there is a copper metal tab that acts as a thermal resistor and as it ages it becomes a weak link in the motor, when it heats up (after you use it for 20 seconds or so) it literally chokes the window motor of all power... until it cools down, which is why the window works fine again after you let it rest...

...There's several fixxes for this, you can either take the motor out and fix it yourself and this is a perminant fix if you do it right, or you can buy a motor from AutoZone or Advanced Auto or the Dealer although you will likely run into this problem again down the road...

I fixxed my own by removing the thermal resistor and the window's rocket up and down with absolutely no problem, almost like they're new.

Here's reference for more information on how to repair this issue

Overview Search

Thermal Resistor Bypass Mod (What I did)

Relay Mod

Both of them will most likely be perminant fixxes, it just depends on how you want to tackle the problem...

The easiest thing to do is replace your window motor, IMHO.

I agree with Shoebox, I'd just replace the motors. Most of the motors offered from the parts stores offer lifetime warranties.

602.00 That is outrageous. Heck, 50 bucks for the replacment motor and Shoebox's tutorial and you could have called it a day for only fifty bucks and an hour or so of your time.

Thank every one for all the replys its been helpfull. My last car was a 92 camaro only had it for about a month and I had to replace the window motor now I got this 94 and again a month later the same thing dam power windows I guess its hard to get manual windows any more. Its going to be more fun trying to cram my supercharger down in there. I have allways been a truck guy there is plenty of room in them to do any thing . O'and my truck has manual windows.

It might be slightly easier and of course I'm not trying to argue but for just half the price of a new motor, I perminantly fixxed my own... and that was just the cost of a drill a sauter and a drill is something you'll need anyway...

Bypassing the thermal limiter does not make your motor immune from failure. If the original poster has a motor like my original motor was, only a complete rebuild of it would have fixed it. Not everyone's motor dies the same death. The thermal limiter bypass is good for people that like to tinker, but getting the motor apart and back together is harder than just replacing one and there is no guarantee that it will fix the problem.

I did the bypass on my 7+year old replacement GM motor just for kicks. It didn't make it any faster that I can tell. Perhaps it will continue to work for a time longer, though.
