Power window problem

I have a 1995 Z28 and just yesterday my driver side window stopped rolling up. I have looked online and found a website with detailed pics and instructions on how to change the motor. My problem is I won't be able to do this until the weekend and until then I would like to have my window up instead of down. Does anyone know how to manually get a power window up? Any help would be great. Also if I can't the window up will I still be able to replace the motor? It seems like a very tight place within the door.

Re: Power window problem

You should be able to loosen the bolts that cause the clamp to hold the glass tight. After doing that just lift the window right up and find a way to support it. Keep it up to do the motor.

I cant see that working. The window is riveted to the main window rail. The main rail rides on the regulator which is riveted to the inside of the door. The window motor is riveted to the regulator. What bolts?

I think it is strange that your window motor died completely. I've never heard of that before. Usually they slow down and eventually overheat and stop. But, once they cool down you can use it again a little until it overheats again.

Are you sure it is the motor? Maybe a bad switch? I've seen switches fail as well.

Re: Power window problem

try thumping on the door with a closed fist in the area of the motor while holding the switch

OK I thought it was weird as well that it just quit. The motor doesn't make any sort of noise when I try to put it up, would'nt it make some sort of dying sound if it were the motor? Does anyone know how to check the switch?

When my window motor died it just died - no noise no warning no nothing, just dead

You can search around on here for instructions to replace it or to remove the motor over heat circuit breaker which apparently also makes the window go really fast and cut kids heads off or something

when my went if I let it sit for a while I was able to at least get enough life out of the motor to get the window back up, but if I remember right it took a couple tries to get it all the way up.

Re: Power window problem

Sometimes the motor fades in and out. I've had no problems with my stock motors (almost 100k miles on it, original owner). Rarely (1 a few months) one will fade in and out like it's got a power shortage. Might be a loose wire or something.

That was my point. They dont stop working completely. You can let it sit and cool off for a while so it will at least move up a few inches at a time.

If your window motor will not budge, even an inch, and it happenned suddenly I'd suspect a switch or fuse issue before I suspected the motor had failed. DO you have a test light? I'd make sure there was power at the switch first, then the motor.

Re: Power window problem

As I recall it went down OK with no problem but then it kind of hesitated and I tried to get it up and it went about a quarter of an inch and then stopped. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I have tried the last 3 days on numerous occasions to get it to go up and nothing not even a budge. I will check the switch with a tester when I get home but I'm still concerned about getting it up manually before I try to change the motor. Any more thoughts on that? By the way thank you everyone for your input. This has helped greatly.
