Exclamation Please Help!! Security System Problem

I have a 1991 Camaro RS. I've been having problems getting it to start for a few years now, but as of late it's been getting worse. When I turn the key all I get is a click noise. I can usually get it started after a few trys. Or I usually have to mess with the security switches underneath the dash.

I have always suspected that it was the factory installed security system, but my husband thought it was the starter. We changed the starter twice and nothing has changed.

Has this ever happened to any of you? I would greatly appreciate any help you can give.

Re: Please Help!! Security System Problem

I had the same problem with my old 89 IROC, I though it was the startert too, it turned out to be the Ignition switch was not sending enough current to the starter solenoid. When it acts up again, check how much voltage (with a volt meter, not a test light) you have at the smaller purple wire at the starter, it should be close to battery voltage, it low or no voltage , a couple more checks are needed and post back

if the security light goes out after turning the key to the on position(not starting), the VATS(vehicle anti-theft system) should be ok

feel free to PM me if you need help checking it

Thanks. I'll have to try that.

The security light does go off after turning the key to the on position(not starting). It's good to know that at least the VATS is ok.

technically, it could be something after the VATS module(theft detterant relay) but not too common(easy to replace though)
