Radiator Fans

This is more of a general engine question than an LS1/6/2/7 question, but i wasnt sure were to put it.

My other car died this weekend in NY, and i live in NJ. I had to leave it at a local garage. It is about 100 miles away. They called and said the radiator fans, motor, and housing needed to be replaced, and wanted to charge 850 for it because they claimed they had to order from the dealer. Now, this is an old 1992 honda. I can fix his with used parts at home.

Question:

How far can i drive the car with out the radiator fans working? This will be mostly turnpike driving, with plenty of air getting through the radiator. Shouldnt i be able to drive it all the way home?

Re: Radiator Fans

You can drive it just fine as long as you're moving. Hopefully your temp gauge on the dash is still working? Keep your eye on that, if it gets too hot you gotta pull over and let it cool off. $850 for fans & housings?? Dealer only parts?? No way!! I used to be a service manager at a local shop here in FL, and had at least 3 aftermarket suppliers for those things. They usually sell the whole assembly (fan blades, fan motors, and housing) at places like Autozone, a lot less than $850. You're looking at about a half dozen bolts and probably two electrical connectors to replace that whole thing.

Re: Radiator Fans

They are trying to F me hard. The parts new from honda are 390. autozone, 200, and used 75. There is 4 bolts, and 1 connector. i can do it myself. they are tryint to take advantage of the fact that i live 100 miles away from there.

Re: Radiator Fans

I hate to accuse anyone of doing that since I used to work in that industry, but.....

HOLY $HIT $850!?!?!?!?

Pick your car up, make sure they don't charge you ANYTHING for diagnostic, other BS charges, and give them the finger as you drive you car home and do it yourself. Use the money you saved to buy some beer, drink it, then drive back up there and **** the beer out on that shop.

Re: Radiator Fans

You should be able to drive it home if you can get it on the highway and stay on there. If it it gets hot shut it down and don't try to keep going home.
