Let's Try More Z28 Wiper Problems Again

The wipers on my 97 Z28 were parking almost straight up when shut off. After reading old threads in this forum I replaced the wiper motor with a rebuilt unit. After that the wipers would park OK when Off BUT when using the Delay function they would park straight up between delay strokes. I tried two other rebuilt motors but the same symptoms remained. Changed out the column switch and still the same symptoms remain. Any ideas on this? Could there be a problem in the mechanical linkage between the motor and the wipers?

There is a relay under the dash that controls all that.

Spinner, Thanks for the info. Can you be more specific. Which relay? Where exactly is it located?

I know of no wiper relay for these cars.. [or at least for 94..]
There is, however, a circuit board that is attached to the wiper motor that controls them.. did that come new with the motors you got?

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm having the same trouble. Ever find a solution? My wipers park fine when off, but rest straight up on the intermittent settings. I just replaced the motor and I still have the same issue. Thanks!

Someone in another post suggested disconnecting the crank from the wiper motor while in the intermittent 'pause' position (vertical for me), rotating the wiper arm to the normal 'pause' position (horizontal) and reconnecting the crank to the motor. I tried that and, sure enough, my 'pause' position is now correct and the wipers still work. HOWEVER, now the park position is vertical (brand new motor/control module, remember). What in the linkage could cause the pause and park to be 90 degrees apart from each other when they should be the same? I'm suspecting something in the sprung crank assembly bolted to the motor. Any ideas at all??

Well, after some head scratching, I've found the problem. I just don't know the solution. There's a catch on the crank arm that bolts to the wiper motor. When you shut the motor off, it rotates back a half turn. This catch catches on a tab on the mounting bracket and disengages the crank arm such that the wipers stay put. It looks like the catch should be spring-loaded, but there's no spring on mine and I have no idea what the spring should look like. Anyone have pictures of a properly functioning crank arm?

I fixed the problem! For all those who may be experiencing similar troubles, there was a spring missing from the crank arm. I discovered that you can buy a whole new crank arm assembly from GM. The part no. is 12494833. It cost me $70 CAD. My wipers work beautifully now.
